RACE HON BY GARDINER.

HORNE WINS SERIES AND MEDAL.

The last race of the first series of races for medals donated by Mr. E. J. Hutchinson was run on' Saturday afternoon by the cycling branch of the New Plymouth Amateur Athletic Club over a course of 13j miles from Waiwakaiho flat to Waitara Road and back. The results were:— R, Gardiner (3min), 38min 54sec !

J. Horne (scr), Sfimin, 12 2-ssec .... 2 J. Donaldson (30sec), 37min l'2sec .. 3 L. Reed (lOsec), ,36min 33sec 4 H. F. Snowden (4min), 40min 17sec 5 J. Horne gained fastest time. The result of the series was: J. Horne (10 points), gold medal,. 1; R. Gardiner (10), silver medal, 2; L. Reed (9), order, 3; J. Donaldson (8), order, 4. Snowden rode well throughout and was unlucky to be beaten out of a place. Rex Gardiner, the winner, finished very strongly, winning easily. A good fight was put up by Horne, Reed, Donaldson and company, Horne gaining second place by half a wheel from J, Donaldson. A similar distance separated Donaldson and Reed. The officials did good work through-

out the series, and the’ road steward, Mr. W. Reid, has so far had no cause to lodge any complaints against the riders. After the race the riders adjourned to Mr. A. S. Hunter’s residence to participate in a pleasant afternoon tea. Mr. E. J. Hutchinson presented the medals. He congratulated Horne on the fine manner in which he won and the consistent way he rode his races. In presenting Rex Gardiner with the runner-up medal, Mr. Hutchinson said he thought Gardiner had put up a wonderful performance. Cheers were called for Mr. and Mrs. Hunter, and the company dispersed after singing “For they are jolly good fellows.” The first race in the second series, for
