SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETS. (From Our Own Correspondent). The monthly meeting of the school committee was held on Thursday evening. Members present were: Messrs. G. Hutton (chairman), H. H. Beere, P. Dalrymple, H. Seagar, A. Hindi, A. Raynor (secretary) and Mr. W. H. Burgess (headmaster). The Education Board wrote in reply *to the committee’s letter regarding trees for planting, stating that the matter had been referred to the senior inspector with power to act. The secretary reported the notice signs for motor traffic to be erected near the schools had been received from the Automobile Association. The chairman’s monthly financial statement showed credit to be about <■£s4. Accounts amounting to, £l4 were passed for payment. The headmaster (Mr. Burgess) reported as follows: —Secondary roll 5’2, average attendance 48.3, primary roll 180, average attendance 166. Miss H. Newton took up her duties at the re-opening of the school on May 27. The Education Board men have erected a cycle shed at the secondary department. The guttering on the porch at the primary school is leaking and requires fixing. The heating apparatus at the secondary school is at present absolutely a failure. After being switched ou continuously from 9 a.m. Monday till 3 p.m. Thursday the pipes themselves showed a temperature of 75 degrees. Last week I had ? to get Mr. Fawcett to fix the pump at the primary school. The chairman was empowered to interview the Power Board. The leakage reported is to be attended to immediately. The chairman reported that they had not got much further with the laying down of the tennis court, although they had endeavoured to get the work commenced. The secretary is to write to a New Plymouth firm for a price for doing the work. It was also decided to purchase two wheelbarrows, and to forward the committee’s share (£l4 7s 6d) for the purchase of typewriters. . A price for ploughing and draining ft portion of the High School grounds- is to be obtained. An invitation was received from the Opua Road committee to be present at the opening of the now school on June 10.. Members decided to attend if possible. The chairman stated that the equipment in the technical classes was excellent. GENERAL. Considering the very unfavourable weather on Thursday evening there was a very good attendance at the Town Hall to formally welcome the Rev. J. G. Wheatley, recently appointed to the charge of tho Presbyterian Church. A warm welcome was extended to him by the representatives of the various circuits and local clergymen. The Rev. Wheatley expressed thanks and hoped that his sojourn in the district would assist in extending the Kingdom of God. During the evening games and musical items were given and the ladies provided supper. The third grade football games, resulted: High School defeated Oaonui, at Opunake, by 5 points to 3; Opunake,defeated Te Kiri, at Te Kiri, by 8 points to 5.
