SECONDARY EDUCATION

N.P. HIGH SCHOOLS’ BOARD. The monthly meeting of the New Plymouth High Schools’ Board was held last night. Present; Messrs H. R. Billing (chairman), J. S. Connett, L. A. Nolan, P. J. 11. White, G. H. Dolby, G. S. Clarke, Dr. E. F. Fookes and Miss C. A. Douglas. Leave of absence was granted Messrs S. G. Smith, M.P., and J. S. S. Medley.

Notice was received that Mr. G.. S. Clarke had been appointed to the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr.- V A. E. South, employees’ representative' on the board.

The director of the technical department, Mr. A. L. Moore, reported that lhe schools had been closed since May 10 and would reopen on May 28 in the case of the daj schools and on May 27 for evening classes. During the recess the City and Guilds of London Institute examinations were held and 16 pupils from the day classes were candidates. The motor engineering senior class was very much in need of one or more fairly up-to-date chassis for advanced work. The plumbing cl.ss was still cramped for room and ho hoped the board could see its way to carry out the extension of the workshop. An application had been made to the department for , a grant, but as only £5O was requ'/ed he thought the work might be commenced at once.

Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., advised that the senior inspector for secondary schools would visit New Plymouth early next month to confer with the principal of the boys’ school with regard to laboratory accommodation.

Miss C. A. Douglas stated that- a new piano was required at the girls’ school.—The matter was left in the hands of Miss Douglas and Dr. Fookes to report at the next meeting. It was stated by Mr. Clarke that the chassis used in the engineering class was obsolete. Satisfactory work could not be- performed by the students and he considered a modern chassis could be purchased at a reasonable cost. —The matter was left in the hands of the technical committee.
