CORRESPONDENCE
THE TASMANIAN FLOODS. (To the Editor). Sir, —As an old Tasmanian, and as I know of many old Tasmanians living in North and South Taranaki, I am writing to ask if you would open a subscription list in aid of the sufferers in tlic appalling disaster caused by the unprecedented floods in the northern parts of Hie island. I have lately received papers giving accounts and illustrations of the terrible damage done. Twenty odd people were drowned, and four thousand, seven hundred homeless and many ruined. It is estimated that the loss will be over a million pounds, and this has to be borne by a population of about two hundred thousand, counting men, women and children. Since living in New Zealand I have met very many old Tasmanians, and know of many more who have prospered, and I especially appeal to these to help their unfortunate countryfolk who have lost everything. I enclose my cheque of £5 to be forwarded to the Mayor of Launceston Relief Fund. — I am, etc., E.L.M. New Plymouth, May 9, „ [We shall be pleased to forward the donation and any similar ones to the relief authorities. —Ed., News.]
