JULIAN CUP COMPETITION. , Association football competitions in Taranaki commenced on Saturday. Many surprises took place in the Julian Cup (senior) competition. Caledonians travelled to Stratford and suffered defeat to the . time of 4 —l. Banger® created a surprise by holding Hawera Celtic’s to a draw-, the score being 2 all. At Eitzroy Pirates beat Albion 4—3. - . . The junior competition opened with a fast and interesting game between Moturoa and Caledonians. Moturoa defeated Caledonians 2 —l. From the kick-off Caledonians set up a strong attack , and A. Smith scored. On the change round Moturoa made the pace fast, E. Johns evening the score. .Keeping up the pressure Moturoa again got through, L. Christiansen landing thr ' winning goal. ' JULIAN CUP MATCH. STRATFORD BEAT CALEDONIANS. The Stratford association football team met Caledonians at Stratford on Saturday in a Julian Cup match, winning by four goals to one. The' standard of play was- not high but the game was often relieved by Hashes of brilliant play on the part of individuals. In the play of both sides it was noticeable that the defence was superior to the attack, neither line of forwards being brilliant. For Stratford Brown and Stewart, backs, and Baker, centre half, were outstanding, -while Puncheon* at outside right played a brilliant game. The Caledonian backs, Mells and O’Neill, played a sound game, while Murray and Fawcett at centre and right half respectively were good. With the advantage of wind and sun to help them Caledonians attacked strongly from the kick-off but Stratford met them with a stubborn defence, until Murray, from a melee in front of the Stratford goal, fired in a hard low shot that gave Harrold no chance. In . enduing play neither team had a sustained advantage and the spell ended with‘the -vjsitbfs one -goal up.< Early in the second half, Potter, the Stratford outside left, sent in a bcauti-. ful cross shot which Hilton neatly'dethe Caledonian posts to >'eveb£ the. score. - The next honours went to Jones, who kicked a good goal from position. Stratford were not' to be frustrated now and a melee before: the Caledonian posts saw Baker head, the ball into the goal. A few minutes later, intercepting a long kick from 'Baker, Puncheon neatly notched the final goal of the match, which ended, soon afterwards with Stratford the winners by four to one. - Mr. Caff (New Plymouth) refereed. , SOCCER AT CHRISTCHURCH.
