NGAERE SPORTS AND SHOW

EXHIBITION OF SCHOOL WORK.

LIST OF PRIZE WINNERS. The -Ngaere School show and sports were held in almost perfect weather yesterday. The attendance was very good. Mr. H. C. Taylor, chairman of the school committee, in declaring the show open, congratulated the teachers on the high standard of exhibits. He had hoped that the show would coincide with the opening of the new school, but the only signs of a new school were the few 4x2 scantling scattered about the grounds, and it was only by a judicious economy of space that any show could be held at all. He urged parents to take an interest in the welfare of the school, and to make the sports an annual event of interest to the district.

Mr. Rod Syme congratulated the committee and staff on the success of the show. It gave the children an ideal. Mr. Syme put forward the claims of the Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Clubs, the raising of calves and growing of root crops. The work, he said, gave children a pride in ownership and something to aim at, which would stand them in good stead when they became farmers. Such work might also go far in preventing the drift to towns. The results are as follow: — CHILDREN’S SPORTS. Judge: Mr. F. E. Bocock. Stewards: Messrs N. Coleman, J. Scott and R.
