SWIMMING AT HAWERA
HIGH SCHOOL BOYS’ SPORTS.
DIVISIONS TIE WITH 30 POINTS.
The Hawera High School’s annual swimming competitions were continued yesterday, when the 'boys’ division held a series of races. Mr. A. Gray, headmaster, and the teachers seupervised the events, assisted by Mr. Bullivant as starter, and Sergt.-Major Stevens, Mrs. Higgs, Mr. Harris and Mr. Whitehead as judges. There were also present Captain J. N. Henry and other officers associated with the Hawera High School cadet camp. Many pupils from both boys’ and girls’ divisions of the school witnessed the contests, many of which were very close and provided great excitement at the finishes.
The inter-divisional championship competition for a cup presented by Mrs. Gibson caused great' interest, the literary division and the commercial division eventually being equal with 30 points each. P. Keegan (13 points) won the senior championship and R. Clark (15 points) carried off the junior championship. At the conclusion Mr. Gray thanked Mr . Higgs, Mr. Bullivant and all others ■who had assisted, and cheers were called for Mrs. Gibson for donating the cupThe results are: —
25 yards, junior championship. —R. Clark 1, J. Thomas 2, D. Nowell 3. Won by three yards, with a yard between second and third.
25 yards, junior handicap. —R. Clark (scr) 1, J. Thomas (4sec) 2, D. Goodwin (3sec) 3. "Won by a yard after a very even race.
50 yards, junior championship. —R. Clark 1, D. Goodwin 2, J, Thomas 3. Three started. Won by five yards. 50 yards senior championship. —P. Keegan 1, E. Lee 2, G. Gibson 3. 25 yards senior handicap.—First heat: J. Boyle (4sec) 1, J. Clapham (4sec) 2, D. Kippenberger (scr) 3; won by a yard. Second heat: L. Edwards (3sec) 1, C. Perrett (4sec) 2, K, Matthews (3sec) 3; won by a, yard. Third heat: W. Cooley (2sec) 1, Smith (2sec) 2; won by one and a half yards, Final: Inwards 1, Clapham 2, Boyle 3. A great race in 16 seconds, only a touch separating the placed swimmers. 50 yards junior handicap.—D. Jones (Gsec) 1, Chadwick (3sec) 2. Two starters. Won by a yard. 50 yards senior handicap.—L. Edwards (3sec) 1, N. Instone (4sec) 2, J. Boyle (4sec) and D. Kippenberger (scr) deadheat 3. Won by five yards. 75 yards junior championship.—R. Clark 1, J. Thomas 2. Two starters. Won by seven yards. 76 yards senior championship —P. Keegan 1, A. Lee 2. Won by four feet in 59 seconds. Last year Lee won in a swim-bff "after a dead heat. 75 yards senior handicap. —L. Edwards. (scr) 1, J. Boyle (4sec) 2. At the second turn Edwards broke even and finished three yards ahead. 100 yards senior championship. —P. Keegan 1, E. Lee 2. At the second turn both were equal, Keegan gaining a yard at the third turn. The fourth length was a neck to neck struggle, the winner only winning by a touch. Junior championship plunge. —R. Senior handicap dive. —L. Edwards (1 point) 28 points, 1; N. Instone (2 points) 26 pointe, 2. Junior championship dive. —R. Clarke I, J. Thomas 2, D. Nowell 3. Senior championship dive.- —E. Lee 1, P. Keegan 2, L. Lewis 3; Beginners’ race. —W. Cooley 1, K. Brett 2, P. Laurent 3. Bun race. —First heat: N. Instone 1, C. Sage 2, F. Bourke 3. Second heat: K. Murtagh 1, J. Tapp 2, A. Dykes 3. Final: Tapp 1, Murtagh 2. Competitors had to fewim across the baths, eat a bun without touching it with their hands, and swim back. This contest provided great amusement. Corfu dive. —N. Instone 1.
Relay race. —Girls beat boys by half a length, the boys giving one length of the baths start. Girls: E. Toy, P. Ekdalil, M. Peters, M. Jackson. Boys: E. Lee, P. Keegan, L. Lewis, R. Clark. ■ The individual pointe were: —Seniors: P. Keegan 13 E. Lee 9, L. Lewis 4, G. Gibson 1. Juniors: R. Clarke 15, J. Thomas 9, D. Nowell 3, D. Goodwin 2.’ I
