CHANNEL TUNNEL PROJECT
ENTHUSIASM IN FRANCE.STATEMENT BY WAR MINISTER. By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. United Service. London, Jan. 28. M. Painleve, French Minister of War, is the latest champion of the Channel tunnel, on which he has issued, a special statement. The “Daily Mail’s Paris correspondent states M. Painleve asserts that it will act as a tonic on Franco-British rela--tions, making Franco-British people Siamese twins in European progress. He ridicules the military objections. It was fantastic and ludicrous to imagine that France would ever invade England through the tunnel, or that England would invade France; therefore it*was childish to criticise the tunnel in the name of national security. “The Channel tunnel does not belong. to the realm of scientific experiment, and work on it can be performed in the immediate future. It presents less difficulty than the Suez or Panama,. canals, and its success cannot be questioned.” Challenged, M. Painleve said these were his own opinions, but he was confident he was also expressing those of the entire Cabinet.
