AFFAIR AT TAHORA SCHOOL

PARENT ARGUES WITH TEACHER

MEMBER OF COMMITTEE FINED.

Charged with disturbing the Tahora school on November 23, and with insulting the teacher, Doris Baldock (now Mrs. Shewry), before the pupils of the school, Alice York, a married woman of Tahora, and a member of the Tahora School Committee, appeared at the Stratford Court yesterday and pleaded not guilty. Mr. R. W. Tate, S.M., fined her £1 (costs £1 13s 4d). Mrs. Shewry said that on November 23 Mrs. York visited the school with her son, aged 12, and complained that two boys had been ‘‘throwing off” at him in the playground. Mrs. York said she was not going to have her boy abused. She admitted that the two boys had not used objectionable language, and witness expressed the opinion that in that case she could not do anything. Mrs, York had insinuated that witness favoured the two boys in question, and allowed them to dictate to her in school. Witness then took Mrs. York into the school, and on being asked about it the children replied that they had not dictated what witness should do. Mrs. York refused to leave the room, and said: “You have no control over the children. You allow them to dictate to you. I’m a member of the committee and 1 have a perfect right here. I’ll call a committee meeting and you can see where, you get off then.”

Sergeant Power: How long did this affair last? —I couldn't say exactly.

Witness went on to say that once before Airs, York had complained that her boy had been savagely thrashed. The boy had been given two cuts with a. strap, and there was nothing wrong with him. As she went down the school path Airs. York had said: “You’re ignorant, and if I got you outside I’d turn you inside out.” e Alice R. York, defendant, stated that a number of petty troubles among the boys had led up to the argument at the school. She denied having said what Airs. Shewry had attributed to her.

Arthur E. Slade, secretary of the Tahora School Committee, said that Airs. Shewry had no faith .in her school committee, and went to Tangarakau and made complaints. She was impulsive and sentimental.

Air. Coleman: Sentimental? Or temperamental ? —Temperamental. Did the committee consider this affair as one to take action about? —No.

On Airs. Shcwry’s evidence alone there was no disturbance of the school, said Air.- Coleman. There was no evidence to show that Airs, York had wilfully disturbed the school, or had insulted the teacher.

“People have got to understand that they cannot go into abuse the teachers, or cause a disturbance,” remarked Air. Tate, in convicting defendant.
