At the Police Court David John Clark was fined £6 and costs, in default 1-1 days’ imprisonment, for cruelly ill-treat-ing a dog. Counsel said that accused tied a collie dog on a chain about six feet long at Wylie’s Crossing, attached it to his motor-cycle, and drove to Mosgiel. The dog could not keep up with the speed of the motor. The pads were torn off its fore feet when it reached Mosgiel and it subsequently died. The animal must have been tossed about badly in trying to get. on its feel as its solos were actually torn off’. The magistrate, in inflicting the fine, said it was only after considerable hesitation he decided not to send accused to rniol. The only fit punishment was for'accused to be dragged behind a motor-cycle for a few miles.
