HEARST PRESS OFFERS PRIZE.
By Telegraph—Press Assn.—"Copyright. Received Jan. 3, 10.25 p.m. Sun. New York, Jan. 2. “I don’t believe prohibition ever will be enforced,” declared Mr. W. R. Hearst, newspaper proprietor, announcing a prize of £5OOO for the best plan to repeat, the Eighteenth Amendment but to substitute in place of prohibition a more liberal and more American measure. Another newspaper editor, head of the New York Telegram; opened the new year with a survey showing 24 per cent, of the liquor sold in New Y ork “speakeasies” contained poison in some form and 10 per cent, of New York’s entire supply contained wood alcohol. Thirty investigators worked three weeks securing 500 samples from 400 illegal saloons . for the papers investigation,.
