November’s coronation ceremonies came to a climax with the police extremely nervous. Searches and arrests have been prevalent, and lose majeste charges numerous. It is now reported that in November there were 50 murders in Tokio and suburbs besides eight by burglars. There were hundreds of armed burglaries, many woundings and other crimes proportionately, while arrests were few. Political crime, however, still monopolises the attention of the authorities. There was serious trouble at the Hokkaido Imperial University, where 1000 } students rioted, destroying property and J boating officials and professors, follow- | ing the president’s report to the Minister of Education who stated to Cabinet that I although ostensibly a protest against the dismissal of one of the students I the riots wore really deep-rooted radicalism among the students.
