DOMINION GOLF TOURNEY

CHAMPIONSHIPS COMMENCE TRAGEDY OF PUTTING GREENS. PROGRESS OF TARANAKI PLAYERS (By Wire.—Special from “Stance.”) Dunedin, Last Night. The open golf championship competitions commenced here to-day in a howling south-easterly which sprang up soon after 10 o’clock. The course was very dry and the greens were fiery. The story of the day was as usual the tragedy of the putting greens, even such accomplished putters as it. P. Dale and P. H. Butcher taking three putts on numerous occasions. The field soon became late in getting away and hold-ups were very numerous. Generally speaking the course was in good order but some funny things can happen. One player at the fifth hole, after playing a good iron second up the hill, had the mortification of seeing the wind blow the ball baek along the ground almost to his feet. At the conclusion of the day’s play Dr. Ross was leading T. H. Horton by cne stroke, while Mclntosh, Morpeth and Butters one stroke further back. Despite the lead of the amateurs it is probable that the steadiness of the professionals will assert itself to-morrow and “Stance” expects Douglas to be very close at the finish. Morpeth (Auckland) would probably have been closer up but for a disastrous seven at the second in the afternoon. That polished player T. 11. Horton (Masterton), with a fine 72 in the afternoon, provided the tit-bit of the day’s play. He started with par figures, 4, 4,3, 3, at the first four holes but was short with his second at the fifth and took five, but he redeemed this with a line three against the wind at the 6th. Par four went down to his credit at the 7th and then he missed an easy putt for a four at the Sth after playing a magnificent second to within three feet of the pin. A four at the 9th saw him out in 34. He was well short with his tee shot at the short 10th and took four. The long Tipperary he did in five. By laying his mashie dead he helped himself to a three at the next. He missed an 18-inch putt for a five at the 13th and obtained a good three at the next. He was short with his second at the 15th, a five resulting. He secured four at the blind 16th. He was bunkered 40 yards frfim the pin at the 17th but laid a fine shot with his mashie niblick less than two feet from the hole. A five at the last gave him his 72. Of the Taranaki players Dale, with 81-79, did best. The Eltham boy is playing really wqll. His 79 represented some fine golf. A fine second at the first gave him a chance for a three, but he missed the return, the hole costing him five. He was too strong with his second at the next and the hole cost him six. A further disaster awaited him at the third, where he was bunkered with his tee shot and missed his putt for a four. Then he started in earnest. A good three at the fourth and a fine four at the difficult fifth improved matters. He followed this with two more fours and only just missed a three at the 7th. He struck trouble with his tee shot at the Bth. He recovered splendidly with a great iron to the green but missed an easy putt for a four. A four at the 9th saw him out in 40, a great effort considering his bad start. He started the homeward journey with a three at the 10th and a five at the long 11th. He just missed a three at the 12th and was down in four. The 13th was a par five. He took three putts at the 14th, the hole costing him four. A long second saw him obtain a fine four at the 15th. His tee shot at the 16th, a bad hole, though hit perfectly straight, was in a bad place and the hole cost him five. He was short at the 17th and too strong with his chip, a five resulting. He played two fine shots at the 18th against the wind and was down in four. G. W. Ritchie was well astray on the greens in the morning and the round cost him 88. He returned a 79, however, in the afternoon, his card reading: Out: 4,5, 4,3, 5,5, 4,5, 4—39. In: 4,6, 4,6, 4,4, 4,4, 4—40; 79. Stephenson (New Plymouth) was playing fine golf up to the green, but that was where it ended. OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP SCORES. THE FIRST AND SECOND ROUNDS. By Telegraph.—Press Association.
