EVENTS ON RACE TRACK

MASTERTON MEETING TO-DAY SEVTEW OF THE FIELDS EXGAGED PROSPECT OF GOOD RACING. (Ry “Moturoa.”) The Ma?‘“rton Racing Club’s spring meeting will be held on the Opaki course to-day. Mr. Bert Coyle’s handicaps have drawn big fields and the other officials at the meeting are: — Starter, Mr. C. O’Connor; judge, Mr. W. P. Russell. Patrons are assured of an excellent day’s racing. The first race, will start at 11.45 a.m. A large field is carded for the NURSERY HANDICAP. Four furlongs.

Royal Flyer, an Australian-bred gelding by Flying King, from Amandine, won the Nursery Handicap at the Hawke’s Bay spring meeting, running the half-mile in 50 2-asec. She may see a short price to-day and opposition may come from Coon Song, which ran prominently at Wanganui. Emotion may cause a surprise. Another big field will be lined up for the MAIDEN STAKES. Six furlongs. All Bst. Grey Witch Mothplane Stanchion Balloon Kirlana Battle Torque Chief Singer Jet Black Tripos Waterspear Billet Araauo Hygrade Dainty Ways Tcheka Lady Spear Dancing Star Vauclcuse Rip dale Guide Light Abbotsford Tatrina Atholspear The New Plymouth mare, Rillet, ran prominently at Carterton and may carry the bulk of the money to-day. Tcheka showed promise as a two-year-old, and Mr. T. Wilford’s gelding may improve on his fourth at Carterton. Dancing Star is another three-year-old and registered a third and a second at the Otaki June meeting. This trio may be prominent to-day. Sixteen have paid up Tn the HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP.

The New Zealand Cup winner of 1924 heads the list, and the doughty son of Sunny Lake and Latchet would only have to be right to be prominent. Shining Armour ran well at Dannevirke and will no doubt be the elect of the punters. Star Area and Lady Gay may run good races and Billion, which won last Saturday, may cause a surprise. When the machine closes Shining Armour will most likely be the favourite, with Lady Gay and Sunart in demand. Punters are set a task in the

Historic has been freely entered in important races at Wellington and Christchurch, and his owner, Mr. V. Biddiford, must have a high opinion of the four-year-old son of Nassau and Brayton. Kalos, Veronese, Grey Mist and Arrow Boy hare recent winning form to recommend them, but, summed up, the chances of Grey Mist, Kalos and Historic may be favoured. Then comes the chief event of the day, the

Black Mint is the topweight and his finishing effort in the Connolly Handicap at Wanganui will not be forgotten. The Gasbag representative, Blimp, has shown improved form this year. He beat the best of the sprinters at Marton and was beaten by the narrowest of margins at Wanganui. Royal Game may take on the seven furlong event later in the day, and the Royal Stag horse may appeal more in that event. David Garrick’s lone essay this season was full of merit, and he ran Tresham and Vigilance to half a head and a neck at Hawke’s Bay. He likes the long straight at Opaki. Horomea won nicely at Carterton, but the class is slightly better to-day and Anolo is hardly ready to run out a hard mile and a-quarter. Vigilance appeals amongst the lightweights. Three who may be prominent are Blimp, Black Mint and David Garrick. Eleven stand their ground in the hack mile, the

Moorgas has the best credentials and he ran Toxeuma to threeparts of a length i the Hawke’s Bav Guineas. Gold Cure has been a disappointment, but Holus P lus is working well at Awapuni. Spearmiss and Rotowhero have both run well lately. When the machine closes, Moorgas may be better fancied than Rotowhero and Holus Bolus. The smallest field of the day is carded for the GRANDSTAND HANDICAP. Seven furlonra.

They ar© classy enough to grace a metropolitan meeting. Commendation with all his weight, may appeal to the public. Royal Game, that game son of Royal Stag and Arihia, seems to thrive on racing and his performance at Carterton was really attractive. King Midas ran well at that meeting, too, and the handsome black gelding should do well on a hard track. Horomea also features in the Cup, as does Anolo. Pangolin won the Marton Hack Cup in good style, but will not have the services of Roy Reed. Summed up, Commendation may play a prominent part in the race, with Royal Game, if reserved, and King Midas, as strong opponents. The programme concludes with the ELECTRIC HANDICAP.

The four topweights may be handy at the finish. Miss Gowrie disappointed at Carterton, but may have been in need of the race. Dry Area, an Acre gelding from G. New’s stable, beat a big field at Hawke’s Bay, and ran good time. Grey Mist and Arrow Boy both have prior engagements, and would run well if started. Arrow Boy and Grey Mist, if reserved, should 1 do well, but in their absence Miss Gowrie may be favoured. RIDING ENGAGEMENTS. The following riding engagements have been announced for the Masterton races: — C. Broughton. —Vaucleuse, Moorgas, Pangolin and Dry Area. T. Metcalfe. —Equitant, Dancing Star, The Dove, Teri and Holus Bolus. A. G. Murray. —Coon Song, Blimp, Kilmezzo, King Quex and Arrow Boy. T. Green. —Rillet, Insurgent and Callanmore. A. McDonald. —Grand National and Kalos. L. G. Morris. —Royal Flyer and Commendation. R. J, Mackie. —Greywitch, Winlock and Grey Mist. C. W. France;—Waterspear. DUNEDIN PROSPECTS. DISCUSSION OF THE FIELDS. . (By “Moturoa.”) The second and concluding day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s spring meeting will be held to-day. The weather has been fine and the tracks are in good order. SECOND HURDLES.

Diana’s Lad won so comfortably on Friday that his rise of 131 b. may not stop him. Serious opponents may be Carinthia and Erin-go-Bragh. DOMINION HANDICAP.

Fourteen mediocre youngsters have paid up for the Dominion Handicap, and Stealth, which ran a fair third to Aspiring and Francolin, may carry most money, with Stately next in demand. KAIKORAI HACK HANDICAP. .

Amor has been the only one to show any form and may carry the bulk of the money, but Royal Flower and All Comment may have outside cnanees. The most important race of the day is the DUNEDIN GUINEAS.

Eight still stand their ground and although several brilliant sprinters are engaged, Phastar is the only entry that has shown any pretentions of staying, but the speed merchants, Silver Paper and Childsplay, may run him off his feet in the early stages. There is no doubt of Silver Paper’s stoutness, and the Paper Money gelding may be a firm favourite with Childsplay and Phastar in demand. RANFURLY HANDICAP. One mile.

and as Pink note won from end to end, he may again be hard. Set Sail disappointed on Thursday, as did Hoylake, but a newcomer is Lucy Locket, which soundly trounced the welter milers. She may start in the Telegraph Handicap but, if reserved, may be a serious rival for Pink Note. Overdrawn ran a good race the first day. Then comes the open “six,” the SHORTS HANDICAP.

The top-weights may need a few more races yet to sret into racing trim, and Royal Saxon, whose rider lost a stirrup on Thursday, should run prominently. Silver Coot runs consistently, and with Tripaway may keep Royal Saxon busy. TELEGRAPH HANDICAP.

prior engagements, and in the absence of Lucy Locket the public may go for Front Rank and Quarterdeck. The biggest field of the day will line up for the CLARENDON HANDICAP.

Royal Tractor seems to improve with every gallop and the Tractor—Royal Delight gelding may carry the confidence of the public. First Raid has featured prominently of late and the pair may be equal to conceding 32 and 181 b. respectively to a moderate field.

The Stratford Racing Club’s annual meeting will take place on January 1 and 2. On the first day the two star attractions are the Stratford Cup Handicap and the Douglas Handicap. The cup, to be decided over a mile and a quarter, should attract many of the best handicap horses in the North Island. The stake is £7OO, including a gold cup valued at £5O. The stake for the Douglas Handicap, six furlongs, is £3OO. Other events on the first day are: — Trial Stakes, six furlongs, £150; Tariki High-weight Hack Handicap, 7i furlongs, £200; Ohura Hack Hurdle Handicap, 1J miles, £200; Juvenile Handicap, five furlongs, £200; Midhirst Hack Handicap, 8j furlongs, £200; Railway Hack Handicap, 6 furlongs, £2OO. TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.”) Royal Flyer, the two-year-old son of Flying King and Armandine, was bought by Mr. W. H. Gaisford, at the Sydney sales for 50 guineas. Judging by his form at Hawke’s Bay, Mr. Gaisford has a bargain. * * * • Black Mint and Royal Game are reported to be working well at Trenthani. * # # # Courtlike ran a fair race at Wanganui and is training oil well. He is engaged in the Nursery Handicap to-day. # * * * Tcheka. a three-ycar-old gelding,, by Night Raid from Russian Maid, carried the “Zetland Spots,” Mr. T. Milford’s colours, prominently last season, and may be expected to be improved on Ills run at Carterton. # • # * Royal Stag, like the “iron-horse,” First Acre, is one of the hardiest horses in training and he literally trains on the train. Last season he faced the starter on 38 occasions, travelling all over New Zealand, and his record read: Six firsts,

3 seconds and 3 thirds. Mr. Ballingce's colt is by Royal Stag from the CytusAema mare, Arihia, and was bred in 1923. This season he has accounted for the Connelly Handicap at Wanganui and the Maungaraki Handicap at Masterton. * * * * Blue Petal, which made her debut in the McLean Stakes on Thursday, is by Paper Money from the speedy Bo Peep, and is the first of that mare’s progeny to grace the turf. She is engaged in the Wellesley Stake} at Wellington. # * * * Fraser is the appelation given to the first of Raceful’s progeny to race, and he will carry the silk at the Waikato meeting. » * * * The full-brother to Merry Mint, Merry Melody, is a fine-looking youngster, and tho many prospective buyers of Merry Roe’s 1926 colt have been knocked back by a prohibitive price. The son of Catmint is a half brother to Kilroe, Sunny Roe and Merry Damon, all useful performers. * « • # Pink Terrace, the 1923 production of Tractor and All Pink, a half sister to Pink Note, has failed to stand another season’s racing and she is to be retired to the matron’s paddock. Her most likely consort will be Paper Money. * * * • Lorna Doon (Tea Tray-Lassie) is to visit the recently-imported sire Whirlwind. Lorna Doon opened her two-year-old career with two wins at Takapuna in 1926, but since then has not shown a repetition of that form. However, she has only started on ten occasions and should make a valuable stud mare. # * * * Coon Song (Hunting Song-Sang Froid), who will race to-day, is a half brother of that good sprinter Royal Blood. Coon Song carries all the size and room for development characteristic of the progeny of the Hurry On sire. * *" # # The dead-heat between Limerick and Wiualot in the Spring Stakes was the fourth in 17 years. The judge was unable to separate Aurofodina and Duke Foote in 1912, St. Carwyne and Reputation in 1915, and Poitrel and Kennaquhair in 1920. By-the-by, Poitrel won the race on the two previous occasions. « * * « In 1919 Mr. \V. T. Hazlett purchased Simper, and a foal by Kilbroney, for 1100 guineas, but his purchase was a happy one. Simper has given the turf those great winners, Gold Light, Razzle Dazzle and Beacon Light, and her latest production won the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui in brilliant style, bringing the earnings of Simper’s progeny to the vicinity of £23,500. • • • • J. Munro is not the only horseman to ride both the Derby and the Epsom winners on one day, for this feat was accomplished by Mr. Connell on Salitros and Greenstead in 1920 and in 1925 W. Duncan rode the Derby winner, Manfred, and then on Metellus made a deadbeat with Boaster. # # ♦ #

Silver Paper’s great gallop on Thursday may send him out favourite in the Dunedin Guineas. Clifford's elect, probably Childsplay, may also go well. ’#» * # Aspiring, who made a hack of Francolin in the McLean Stakes, is a halfsister, by Some Boy 11., to Silver Paper, and the pair are a good advertisement for their dam, the speedy Silver Peak. * 4i< * * Diana’s Lad relished 9.12 in the Spring Hurdles at Wingatui on Thursday, and a rise of 2libs has not stopped his owner to-day. It remains to be seen if it will stop Diana’s Lad. The class is very rough. * * * * Very small dividends were returned by the winners of the big double at Dunedin on the first day. Yet, it ie w’onderful to see horses like Count Cavour (7th in order of favouritism), Footfall (6th), and Money Order (10th) so neglected. » * # * At Inglis’ Randwick sales on October 2 the following horse© found new owners: Greengrocer, Mr. D. Lewis, at 275 guineas; Amplifier, Mr. H. Ireland, at 525 guineas. # * * # Footfall ran a decent race in the Mosgiel Handicap on Thursday, and should be benefited by the outing. The son of Autumnus and Warstep does not win out of his turn; in fact, last season he failed to win a race, though he ran a second and four thirds in eight starts. • • » • The New Zealand Cup candidate, Lucy Locket, ie not highly thought of in the South, hut she managed to win a mile race in good time at Dunedin, and may be better at five years than at four. Last year she had a hard season's racing, starting 29 times for two firsts, five seconds, and three thirds. • * * * Four New Zealand-bred horses have now won the rich Breeders’ Plate at Randwick. They are Boniform, Almoner, Nincompoop and Gold Tinge. The latter, who is by Paper Money-Vicereine, by Birkenhead-Roie, cost only 250 guineas as a yearling, and won the race mentioned in hollow fashion, spreadeagling fifteen others from the end of a furlong until the finish. • « • •

Peacemaker, by Lhnond (imp.)-Make-piece, ridden by Roy Reed, was one of the extreme outsiders in the Breeders’ Plate, but ran a respectable third. The unplaced division included Phantom Reef, a colt by Psychology (imp.)-Des-ert Gold. However, with first and third, New Zealanders held their end up well.

In transpires that Roy Reed did not quite know the strength of Limerick in the Spring Stakes, and “Pilot,” of the Sydney Referee, states that a few yards

off the post Wiualot appeared to have the advantage, but Limerick came again and his last stride brought him level with Winalot. • • • • Fourth Hand was the early leader in that event and the pace was so slow that the first half-mile took 57sec. Then the pace was put on and Limerick was timed to run the middle half-mile in 481 sec., and the final half in 49sec. • • • • Weight stops the best of them in the Melbourne Cup. Carbine, the New

Zealand wonder, holds the record for weight carrying, when he lumped 10.5 to victory in 1890. Since then, with the exception of Poitrel, who carried 10.0 in 1920, 9.3 lias been the weight-carry-ing limit, and the law of averages i» against Spearfelt and Winalot taking the premier honour of Australasia next month. Winalot (Rossendale —Princess Volga) ie a four year-old horse in J. W. Cook’s stable, and it would lie pleasing to see him carry his 9.4 first past the post.
