BILLY BOYS’ WORKSHOP

HOW TO MAKE A MATCH STAND. This little match stand is quite easy to make, and looks much nicer on the table or mantelpiece than a match box. It is made of one of those little cartons which are sold for picnic parties or in which we sometimes buy jam or cream. It is better to get one on which there is no writing or printing.

This carton is glued to a little block of wood, and the striking paper from an ordinary box of matches, or a piece of emery paper, is glued across the block as indicated in the sketch. The carton is then painted in bright colours according to your taste or your room. Mark the design out in pencil first, and. put the paint on rather thickly, using as little water as possible. You may use house-paint on these cartons, if you prefer it. When quite dry fill your stand with coloured matches pud you will have made a pretty and useful ornament.
