WOMAN STOPS DOG FIGHT
SILVER MEDAL GIVEN FOR PLUCK The first West-country woman to receive a silver medal for stopping a dog fight is Airs. W. Congdon, of Exeter. She was walking along a street when she saw two rough-haired terriers engaged in what looked like a fight to the death. One dog was on top of the other and the under dog was held in a death grip. Mrs. Congdon, regardless of danger, caught the uppermost dog by the head and prized its jaws apart, thus enabling its victim to escape. This plucky deed took several minutes to perform, and meanwhile Aire. Congdon was badly bitten through one thumb and had a dislocated finger and other injuries. It is unusual for the Society of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to award medals for the separation of fighting dogs, but the society did so in this case, it was stated when Airs. Congdon'was presented with the medal by the Mayoress of Exeter, because it was regarded as exceptional in that she undoubtedly, by her action, saved the life of the vanquished animal.
