STRIKE SENSATIONS

RUFFIANS FIRE ON HOUSE EFFORT TO EXTEND DISPUTE MILITANTS UNRELENTING CALL TO ALL WATERSIDERS By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Australian Press Association. Received Oct. 11, 10.10 p.m. Melbourne, Oct. 11. Events march with uncanny quickness in this city. The latest sensation, following on the heels of the bomb outrages, is the firing of shots at a house by a party in a car late last night. A young man walking home along Toorak Road stated to-day that he saw a car stop by a house which was near the fashionable quarter of South Yarra. Three shots were fired quickly, followed by sounds of splintered glass- The car moved off and when it was turning the corner into a nearby street two more shots were fired. Police patrolmen were soon on the scene and found outside the house another car, which they believed was stolen. It was unoccupied but contained a dressing gown and a bottle of beer. The lady of the house was unable to throw any light on the occurrence. Though rebuffed by the drivers’ and carters’ refusal to join the strike, the militants of the Watersiders’ Council of Action are endeavouring to extend the dispute to railwaymen and other organisations, including tugboatmen. A motion declaring the Victoria dock black is expected to be carried at an afternoon meeting to which the railwaymen’s representatives have been invited. The railwaymen are at present handling goods discharged on the wharves by volunteers. An attempt was made to-day to interfere with carters at Port Melbourne, bales of wool being dumped from t'-e lorries by the strikers. The drivers managed to reload them amid the jeers of the crowd. The arrival of the police prevented further molestation. Shipowners are anxious to recommission coastal vessels but will not decide until the attitude of the seamen at all ports has been defined. Men holding good discharges and not members of the Australian Seamen’s Union have offered to man the ships. Victorian seamen at a meeting to-day decided to refuse to man any ships. A mass meeting of watersiders and seamen at Brisbane to-day adopted a resolution demanding the Australian Council el Tracies Unions and the combined unions’ executive to call upon all union watersiders throughout Austral” to cease work. A resolution that overseas seamen be called out and billeting be arranged for them was also carried.
