The steamer Carriso has sent a radio message stating that on October 3, between 17deg. 25min. south latitude and 176 deg. 9min. west longitude and 18deg. 28min. south latitude and 177 deg. 20min. west longitude, she passed large fields of volcanic ash and pumice several miles in extent.
