CONTROL OF SCOTLAND YARD
SECOND IN COMMAND RETIRING. By Telegraph.—Press Association. London, Oct 7. The Daily Mail states that the Assistant Commissioner' at Scotland Yard, Major-General Sir William Childs, will retire with the Commissioner, Briga-dier-General Sir William Horwood, on November 6. Lord Byng will succeed Sir IV. Horwood. The Home Secretary, Sir William Joynson-Hicks is searching for a new Assistant-Commissioner. SIR W. CHILDS WILL NOT SPEAK. FURTHER RESIGNATIONS HINTED. Australian Press Association. Received Oct. 8, 5.5 p.m. London, Oct. 8. Sir Wyndham Childs denies the statement that he will speak, but at the right time. He has not hinted at any revelations, which are absurd fiction. “When a man leaves a public position sueh as at Scotland Yard,” he says, “he must dismiss from his mind any knowledge acquired; otherwise he would be unfit to be an Englishman.” Certain newspapers hint at further resignations from Scotland Yard.
Major-General Sir Wyndham Childs has been Assistant-Commissioner Metropolitan Police since 1921. He was born in December, 1876. He entered the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry, 1900; was captain in the Royal Irish Regiment, 1910; brevet major, 1912; major Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry, 1915; brevet lieutenant-colonel, 1917; colonel, 1919; brigadier-general, 1916; temporary major-general, 1917; staff captain at the War Office, assistant adjutantgeneral, 1916; director of personal services, War Office, 1916-19; deputy adju-tant-general to the forces, 1919-21. He served in the European War and retired in 1922. He was created K.C.M.G., 1919, and K.8.E., 1921.
