MIGRATION TO CANADA
20,000 BRITISH FAMILIES HOME GOVERNMENT SCHEME ASSISTANCE TO BUY FARMS By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright Australian Press Association. Received Oct. 7, 5.5 p.m. United Service. Ottawa, Oct. 6. The Department of Immigration is considering a proposal by the British Government for the settlement of 20,000 British families on Canadian farms over a ten years’ period. It is understood the scheme as proposed is based on the recommendations of Lord Lovatt during his recent visit, when he conferred with the immigration officials
It is understood the settlers are required to possess agricultural training. It is proposed to provide five thousand cottages for the new settlers until they have accumulated small amounts of savings and acquired CanrAian farm experience. Then they will be provided with farms which they are expected to pay off over a period of thirty years, the interest being at the rate of 0 per cent.
The Canadian Government will issue land bonds at an interest of 4J to 5 per cent., secured upon the land which is purchased for re-sale to the settlers. The bonds are guaranteed by the British Government as to principal and interest.
The Immigration Minister, Mr. Forke, is now in Western Canada, and there is no official confirmation, but it is suggested he may place the proposals before the provincial Premiers.
