BOYS PLAY WITH SIGNAL
RISK OF CAUSING ACCIDENT. Six little boys stood all in a row in the Christchurch Children’s Court to answer a charge of having interfered with the signalling apparatus in the railway yard at Papanui. Senior-Sergeant O'Hara said that an attempt was made to pull down the arm of the signal, but it was not successful. The father of two of the boys said that he had had no trouble with them. The part of the railway yard where they played was used as a right-of-way. His boys, on going home, told him where they had been and what they l:ad been doing. They were given a severe warning, and the danger of interfering with the apparatus was pointed out to them. Instead of bringing them before the Court, a warning might have been given by the police. They were just fooiinog around, doing no wrong. Mr. H. A. Young, S.M., pointed out to the boys that, by interfering with the signals, they might have caused a serious train smash. “You must not interfere with the signals or play on the line,” he said. “You promise you won't do it any more?” he asktj. “Yes, sir,” they replied with one voice. “Very well,’ ’the magistrate said, “you can go.”
