NORTH ISLAND CYCLE TOUR

EX-SOLDIER MAKING EFFORT. (By Wire—Special to News.) Auckland, Last Night. Travel “stunts” are the vogue just now. A new one was initiated at Newmarket yesterday when a one-legged exsoldier started out to cycle round the North Island, a longer journey, he claims, than that of Kingsford Smith from Sydney to Christchurch. The object of the one-legged “digger” is to circumcycle the North Island, a distance of 1400 to 1600 miles, starting without funds and earning his keep on the voyage. Rihari Heke is the name of the cyclist, and he claims to be the only surviving white descendant of the famous Ngapuhi chief, Hone Heke.
