Mr. J. Brown and Mr. E. J. Ulander, who have been visiting Auckland, re turned to New Plymouth yesterday. A Sydney message reports that Mr. Charlton, former Federal Labour leader, has announced his retirement from politics, owing to failing health. After 30 years’ service in the nursing profession, Miss A. Taylor, lady superintendent of the Auckland Public Hospital, will retire on superannuation at the end of the year. A Christchurch message says that the Wheat Research Institute committee has appointed Mr. H. E. West, of Winnipeg, Canada, as wheat research chemist, out of 27 applications. The death has occurred of Sir Beethom Whitehead, aged 70, who during a long diplomatic career was at one time British Minister at Belgrade, states a British official wireless message.
Messrs. G. E. Neilson, J. McLeod, G. E. Jago, C. Brown and W. A. Guy, who motored to Auckland on Friday for the representative Rugby match, returned to New Plymouth yesterday. The King of Spain, who has been visiting Sweden, arrived in Scotland on Thursday on a short visit to the Duke of Sutherland at Dunrobin Castle, reports a wireless message from Rugby. A New York cablegram says that the engagement of Sir Hubert Wilkins, the airman, who has just started for the Antarctic, to Miss Suzanne Bennett, the Australian actress, is announced. The death of Mr. Thomas Kirker, aged 70, a well known bowler and former postal officer, is reported in a Press Association telegram from Christchurch. Mr. Kirker was postmaster for a time at Te Aro, Courtenay Place, in Wellington, and Sumner.
News has been received by Mr. Martin Sutherland, New Plymouth, of the death of his brother David, which occurred at Reguline, Western Australia. Mr. Sutherland, who was 82 years of age, was a well-known figure in New Plymouth in the early days, and did service in the Maori War—with the Bushrangers and also with the Patea Rangers. He had been gold digging in Western Australia for the past 40 years.
