MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The winner of the last fortnightly Druids’ euchre tournament was Mrs. Furborough, who won in a play-off with Mrs. Burgess and Miss Death. Miss Death Won tho second prize and Mrs. Burgess the third, while the consolation prize went to Miss Prince. In the men’s section, Messrs. H. Dale and S. D. Coleman tied for first place and the play-off was won by Mr. H. Dale. Mr. Coleman secured the second prize and Mr. W. Scown the third after a play-off with four others. Much interest is being shown in the scheme to provide a radio installation at the Hawera hospital, and tho. committee appointed has matters well in nand for a house-to-house canvass ,in the near future, it being the intention that the canvass of each area should take place on the same day. According to a report of Air. R. B. Foord, the weather during August was fine for the first part of the. month, with a number of frosts and high barometer readings between the Bth and 12th, after which a heavy fall took place. Tho greatest daily fall of rain was experienced on the 13th, when 212 points were recorded. The remainder of the month saw broken weather with dull showery days and cold winds, culminating on the’ 23rd with a thunderstorm and 104 points of rainfall. During the month five frosts were recorded, the heaviest being 4dcg. on two occasions. Winter conditions made themselves felt in Eltham on Wednesday, heavy driving rain falling nearly all day with a cold southerly wind blowing, making conditions extremely unpleasant out of doors.
