LOCAL DAYLIGHT SAVING
NEW PLYMOUTH PROPOSAL BOROUGH COUNCIL WILL NOT ACT. PARTIAL SCHEME NOT FAVOURED. The New Plymouth Borough Council has decided to take no action regarding the proposal to establish a local daylight saving scheme to operate in the town during the coming summer. ‘I am in a bit of a quandary,” eaid the Mayor (Mr. H. V. S. Griffiths) at a meeting of the council last night. On the one hand, he continued, he was being pressed by a section of the public to cad a public meeting and endeavour to inaugurate a scheme of local daylight saving, while on the other hand there were equally strong representations being made that no action should be taken. Personally he was inclined to think that unle® the scheme could be extended to embrace the whole province it would not prove practicable. He thought the council should give its opinion in the matter. Cr. P. E. Stainton said he was an ad* vocate of summer time, but considered it would be useless unless it were made at least provincial in scope. With train services, etc., as they were, it was no use having daylight saving in one town and not in the others of the province. Cr. F. Amoore agreed with Cr. Stainton. The position was made hopelessly difficult, he said, by the awards and other labour legielation in force. It was resolved that as far as the council was concerned no action should be taken.
