BY-ELECTIONS IN BRITAIN
FIVE CONTESTS NOW PENDING. British Official Wireless. Rugby, June 24. Of five Parliamentary by-elections now pending little interest is being displayed in those taking place in Epsom, Holborn and Hallam (Sheffield) owing to the substantial majorities by which Conservatives have held these seats in the past. In Halifax no election has taken place for many years, Mr. J. H. Whitley, a Liberal, having secured an unopposed return ever si*ee his appointment as Speaker of the House of Commons seven rears ago. Three candidates are now ontesting the seat. There are also (hree candidates for the seat at Carmarlhen, which is rendered vacant by the rlevation to the peerage of Lord Melehett, formerly Sir Alfred Mond, who was returned as a Liberal at the last election, but later crossed the floor of the House.
