BAND’S FANCY DRESS BALL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Although the weather was about as unpropitious as one could possibly imagine for the ball on Wednesday night, a gopd crowd gathered and were well repaid by a .good evening’s enjoyment. Some interesting and novel features had been provided, and were duly introduced, and they' lent some amusing events to the proceedings. The decorations of the hall and stage had been well attended to by committee and gave the impression of a little bit of fairyland. Boulton’s orchestra supplied the music, and the M.’sC., Messrs Hansen and L. Hughes, saw to it that the fun never flagged. Numbers of fancy costumes made up a varied and interesting scene. Various competitions which took place added to the general air of enjoyment. The prizewinners were;— Best Fancy Dress (lady's). —Miss M. Dick (If Winter Comes). Men’s.—Mr. A. Phillips (Sheik). Balloon Dance. —Mr. Fergus and Miss Kasper. Spot Dance.—Mr. W. Bourke and Miss Vine. Monte Carlo Dance.—Mr. Anglesea and Miss Wilson. Supper Dance. —Mr. Gregg and Miss Beamish. Mr. Spondulix.—Mr. 0. Crawford. Mr. and Mrs. Rockefeller.—Mr. 0. Hammonds and Miss F. Hay. Lady’s Balloon Dance.—Miss M. Dick. Dash Waltz.—Mr. Lloyd and Miss Neely. Kewpie Dance.—Mr. W. Bourke and Miss Christie.
A guessing competition for a lady’s handbag Was won by Mr. R. Page. Present in fancy costumes were:— Miss Larking (Chicken), Miss Morrison (Rooster), Miss F. Hay (Eastern Princess), Miss Gregory (Russian Peasant Girl), Miss Gilbert (Pierette), Miss N. Forrester (Me), Miss Neely (Dutch Girl), Miss M. Cosgrove (Golliwog), Miss S, Lewin (Grasshopper), Miss Kasper (Powder Puff), Miss W. Beamish (Rainbow), Miss G. Rothery (Egyptian Lady), Miss O'Dea (Eskimo Lady), Miss K. Cosgrove (Golliwog); Miss C. Duncan (Jolly Girl), Miss F. Lewin (Jazz pierette), Miss Rowe (Dutch Girl), Miss I. Campbell (Charlie’s Aunt), Miss I. Silby (Poppy), Mrs. Phillips (South Sea Island Lady), Mr. R. Walker (Apaches). MANAIA FIRE BRIGADE. The annual meeting of the Fire .Brigade was held on Thursday evening, when Superintendent George White presided. The annual report stated that the present strength of the brigade consisted of eleven members. The superintendent thanked members for their year’s work. Although there had been no fires during the year the brigade had maintained a high state of efficiency. During the year seven firemen had been recipients of honours, this being a record. The plant was all in good order. The financial position of the brigade left much to be desired. The superintendent then vacated the chair and the election of officers was conducted by Mr. Innes, chairman of the town board. The following were appointed:—-Superintendent, G. White, sen.; deputy, J. Kendall; foreman, D. Reardon; first hydrant, J. Jeronisen; second hydrant, J. Reardon; first branch, W. Vincent; second branch, W. Budd. Mr. W. Budd was appointed secretary, Mr. W. Vincent having declined further service in that capacity. The chairman then presented the honours won as follows:—Two-years’ bars, Superintendent White (one bar); Fireman Budd (two bars); Fireman G. White, jun. (one bar); Fireman W. Vincent (one bar). The superintendent moved, an appreciation of the services of the ex-secre-tary, Mr. W. Vincent, he having held that-office fcr the past eight years. After the business was finished the remainder of the evening was devoted to a social function, and an enjoyable time was spent. time was spent. Songs were given by Messrs J. Cosgrove, W. Budd and W. Vincent, and gramophone selections by Mr. J. J. Hudson. A series of home meetings has been inaugurated by the W-C.T.U. for the winter months. The first meeting was held on Tuesday last at the house of the president, Mrs. Robinson. It’ was then arranged to send the annual giftbox to the Frances Willard Home, the W.C.T.U. orphanage, at the end of the present month; and also a subscription to the organising fund. There was a fair pttendance at the meeting.
The committee of the public library lias been busy lately giving an overhaul to the books, and are arranging to have any necessary repairs to the books on the shelves attended to. In addition, over 50 new books have lately been added, so that subscribers’ wants are being well supplied.
