RIVERLEA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A number of Riverlea card players went to Kaponga on Tuesday. The home players proved the winners. Mrs. Thorpe again took homo the Riverlea prize. At the clearing sales dairy cows, implements and horses are well sought after. Mr. Hughes, Te Kiri, has moved to the upper Mangawhero Road, where he has purchased a farm. MANGAMINGI. LODGE DANCE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The officers and members of the Loyal Eltham Lodge, Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows, held a dance in the local hall on Friday evening last. The dance, which was the first lodge dance ever held out here, was a huge success from start to finish. The hall, which had been very tastefully decorated with the lodge colours, white, blue, scarlet, gold and purple, by Mrs. Woodley. Miss Violet Woodley and Sisters Hickey and Woodley, came in for tnueh favourable comment, and the ladies concerned are to be congratulated on their very artistic work. The floor was in perfect order, and with Sait’s well-known orchestra supplying the music all enjoyed themselves. A very nice supper was provided by the sisters of the lodge, and they also are to be congratulated on the manner in which that onerous but very necessary duty was carried out. Past Grand Brothers Woodley and Jones, assisted by Bro. Tolland, carried out the M.C. duties, and kept everything going merrily until the small hours of Saturday morning. During an interval in the proceedings, Past Grand Bro. Woodley thanked all present for their attendance and called for a vote of thanks to those who worked so hard to make the function a success. He then called upon Bro. J. M. Bates, Provincial Grand Master of the Taranaki district, to address the gathering. Bro. Bates, in a brief but pointed address, referred to the benefits of the order, and invited those who were not already members to seriously consider the question and join up as soon as possible. POLITICAL. Like the rest of the country, we are beginning to take an interest in politics again. We have recently been transferred from the Egmont to the Patea electorate, but I think we shall take more interest in the contest between Mr. C. A. Wilkinson and Hie sitting member (the Hon. O. J. Hawken) for the Egmont seat than in the fight for our own constituency. GENERAL ITEMS. We have experienced a very favourable autumn, and there is still plenty of feed about. Most of the stock, is in tiptop condition, and should winter very well. A good deaL of top-dressing has been done, practically every farmer here having a “go” at it this year. PERSONAL. I am pleased to be able to report that Mr. R. R. Brown’s son has quite recovered from his serious accident of about three months ago, and is again at home with his parents. Mr. Brown has returned from Whangarei, where he attended the dog trials championship. Mr. P. Hickey and Mr. A. McDonald are at present having a holiday in the Hawke’s Bay district. The Missed G. and V. Woodley have returned from a visit to their grandparents in Palmerston North. Nurse Woodley, of the Hawera Public Hospital, visited her parents last week end. Miss Martin is visiting her aunt, Mrs. Meredith, at Waipakarau. Mr. E. G. Woodley left for Palmerston North on Saturday to be present at his father’s seventieth birthday. DOUGLAS, (From Our Own Correspondent.) Favoured with a fine night a large crowd from Douglas and the surrounding districts assembled at the local hall on Tuesday evening, the occasion being a social in aid of Anglican Church funds. The first part of the evening was taken up with a euchre tournament, and some very enjoyable and exciting games resulted. The tenth game brought the competition to a close, and Miss Louie Walter w'as declared winner of the ladies’, while Mr. H. Rumball carried off the men’s prize. Consolation prizes were awarded Mies Bertha Key and Mr. J. Cresswell. The floor was soon cleared for dancing, and a very happy crowd danced the hours away to excellent music supplied by local talent. The M.C. did not forget the children, and great was their delight when a polka was announced for them. An enjoyable break from dancing was made when songs were sung by Mesdames Johnston, Fletcher, and Walter, and Messrs. Johnston and Cole and a pianoforte solo rendered by Miss Fazackerly, all of which were much appreciated, especially Mrs. Johnston’s rendering of “Spring is Coming” and Mr. Cole’s “Laughing Song,” which he sang by special request from the children. Guessing competitions were a great feature of the evening’s programme, and very brisk., business was done by a

band of young ladies with the cake, torch, slippers, duchess set, brace of ducks and case of apples. During the evening Mr. Rumball, on behalf of the committee, tendered thanks to all who donated so freely, thereby making all moneys taken clear profit; to the hall committee, for the free use of the hall; and to all for their presence, making the evening the outstanding success it was. Rev. Alexander then spoke a few words, and thanked the people for their support. Mr. Rumball proceeded to break the sealed envelopes in quest of the lucky numbers for the various competitions and the results were as follow: Cake, Mrs. E. Walter; torch, Mr. G. Fishwick; slippers, Mr. S. Coles; duchess set, Mr. J. Cresswell; brace of ducks, Mr. H. C. Johnston; box of apples, Johnny Wilmshurst. A very dainty supper was supplied by the local ladies, and towards the end of the evening the bountiful supply left over found a ready market. As a result of the effort the funds have benefited to the very pleasing sum of over £24. OKOKE. FOOTBALL MATCH. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The Pukearuhe-Okoke football match was played last Wednesday afternoon at Okoke, in wet and cold weather, resulting in a win for Okoke by 17 to 3. Shortly after the game commenced Puke was awarded a penalty, and a neat kick by Mick White gave them the first score. Play then became brisk, and Page and Knight carried the ball into Puke’s territory, Knight getting over the line and equalising scores. A few minutes later Scott scored another try for Okoke, but failed to convert. Pukcaruhe then made the pace very warm, but the Okoke defence was too strong. Some fine forward passing terminated in Slight getting over the line, and he converted his try. In the second spell Grech and Slight scored further tries for Okoke, neither being converted and the game ended: Okoke 17 and Pukearuho 3. An outstanding feature of the match was the fine play by the new members of both teams. Mr. Norman Street was the referee. After the match the teams and their supporters adjourned to the hall, where the visitors were the guests of the local club at a dinner. The secretary (Mr, A. Knight) and his large staff, especially the ladies, are to be congratulated on the efficient manner in which they handled the large crowd at dinner. EUCHRE PARTY. The hall society’s third euchre and dance took place on Wednesday evening, when there was a very large attendance, including the visiting footballers and their supporters. Seventy played euchre, and there were some very keen games, resulting in five men having to play off for the gent’s first prize, the prize eventually being won by Mr. E. K. Blundell, with Mr. V, Wells second and R. Jones “booby.” The ladies’ first was won by Mrs. kapo, and in a play-off for the second, Mrs. E. Holley beat Miss Tui Weston. Three tied for the ladies’ “booby” and it was finally won by Miss Bessie Whittaker. Dancing was kept up until a very late hour to music supplied by Mrs. Blundell, Alf. Smith, and Martin, while Mr. E. Holley carried out the duties of M.C. During a lull in the dance the captain of the Puke team made a short speech on behalf of his team, thanking the local people and supporters then gave three lusty cheers for the Okoke people. Mr. A. Knight responded on behalf of the local team, and made humorous reference to the match. He hoped that the visitors had all had an enjoyable time, and they would be assured of a similar reception on the next occasion that they visited Okoke. Cheers were then called for Pukearuhe and the ladies. The visitors annexed several prizes, Mrs. Kapa winning the euehre, and Mrs. E. White and Mr. O. Skelton winning competitions. The ladies’ committee had the supper arrangements well in hand, and there were many remarks of praise from the visitors. HALL SOCIETY. A meeting of the hall society was held last Monday evening, there being present: Messrs. Albert Jones, E. Holley, and M. E. Fraser (treas.), Mr. E. K. Blundell presiding. Mr. A. Knight attended on behalf of the football club. Several important matters were dealt with, including the question of a heater for the hall. The metal for the paths has been delivered at the hal‘l, and one path has been completed. It was decided to secure another euchre punch, and also a whistle for the euchre tournaments. The football club was granted the use of the hall to entertain the Pukearuhe footballers at a dinner. GENERAL AND PERSONAL. Okoke’s return match with Pukearuhe wil be played at Pukearuhe next Wednesday afternoon, when ’ Puke assures us of a good time in their district. Miss Winnie Baker, who has been the guest of Mrs. E. Whittaker (Piko), has returned to Waitanga. Mrs: V. Pennington (Waitara) is visiting relatives in this district, and expects to be here about a fortnight. Mrs. Vai. Jones is visiting Tarata.
