Mr. T. Buxton, of Wellington, and formerly of New Plymouth, is visiting Taranaki.

Mr. H. Vickcrman is at present in New Plymouth in connection with municipal hydro-electric development schemes. The Rev. Morton Ryburn, M.A., of Punjab, India, arrived in Eltham yesterday on a visit to Ills uncle, the Rev. J. A. Ryburn. Mr. R. 0. Griffiths, 8.A., of Hastings, has been, appointed assistant master at the Hamilton High School, and will take up his duties on July 3. Mrs. John Craig, of New Plymouth, who is at present on a visit to Wellington, has been specially engaged to sing over the wireless on Saturday evening.

General Sir Philip Chetwode has been appointed Chief of the General Staff in India, in succession to LieutenantGeneral Sir Andrew Skene, states a British Official Wireless message. Mr. A. E. Gibb, who has represented the New Zealand Football Association on the council of the English Football Association for many years, has written resigning on account of ill-health.

Mr. A. Ernest Marnier, tutor-organ-iser of the Victoria University .College district for the W.E.A. movement, will arrive in New Plymouth early next month to commence a series of lectures.

The State Governor of New South Wales, Sir Dudley de Chair, has been notified from London that his term of office has been extended for twelve months, till February, 1930, states a cable message. A Wellington telegram says that the Chief Justice, Sir diaries Skerrett, has so far recovered as to be able to leave the Bowen Street hospital Tor his home at Lowry Bay. It is his intention to take some months’ rest before resuming his official duties.

The death occurred at Tuhikaramea, Hamilton, recently, of an old Waikato identity, Mr. Charles Bradshaw Vickers, at the age of 85 years. Mr. Vickers was born at Walthamstow, Essex, and came to New Zealand on the slap Simla in 1851. For some years he was engaged in farming in Taranaki, and 65 years ago went to Tuhikaramea.

“It is with deep regret the council records the death of two of its oldest and most valued members, Mr. Newton King and Mr. Stanley Shaw,” said the annual report presented to the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce last night. "Both of them were closely associated with the chamber for many years, each in tujn ably filling the position of president.” Mr. John Hoskin Carter, a well-known Wellington draper, died on Tuesday night. Deceased, who was born in Devon in IS6I, came out to New Zealand in his 20th year, and for 22 years was resident in Dunedin. He was then, for seven years, in Invercargill, after which lie eanie to Wellington where he entered into the drapery business. That was in 1908. While in Dunedin the late Mr. Carter was a leading member of the Masonic craft.

Amongst recent visitors to the North Egmont hostel are:—Mr. Hopkinson and party (Auckland), Mr. Banks, Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Mitchell (Lower Hutt), Mr. and Mrs. K. Innes (Palmerston North), Mr. D. A, Abbies (Palmerston North), Mr. R. Sealey (Waitoa, Hamilton), Mr. Bishop (England), Mr. H. Davie (Levin), Mr. and Mrs. Worrall and child (United States); also the following New Plymouth residents—Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Cmickshank, Mrs. B. H. Chaney and child, Mr. and Mrs. J. McLeod, Misses Bruce and North, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Fraser and family, Mr. Banks and Mr. Russell.

The deatn occurred at Auckland of Mr. Thomas Collins, aged 89. Born in Dublin, Mr. Collins spent several years at sea and came to New Zealand in the Gladiator in 1860, landing at Nelson. Later he settled at Port Chalmers, where he married. Then he went to Auckland and established a business, which he conducted fof about two years, His next venture was at Parihaka, Taranaki, where he supplied provisions to the settlers until <the raids of marauding Maoris forced him to leave. He returned to Auckland and eet up in business, most of his customers being soldiers stationed there. Later Mr. Collins was in business in different parts of New Zealand and Australia, and he returned to Auckland in 1900. He is survived by bis widow.

The resignation of Mr. Richard Cock from the position of sinking fund commissioner to the New Plymouth Harbour Board, for health reasons, was received at a meeting of the board yesterday. Mr. Cock stated that he regretted having to give up the position, but was pleased to be able to say that after many years of service he was leaving the position without ever having Incurred a loss over the investments with which he had been concerned. The chairman of the board (Mr. O. E. Bellringer, M.P.) said Mr. Cock had been a member of the board for many years, and was at one time chairman. He was the senior sinking fund commissioner, and had always taken a deep interest in matters connected with the port. On the motion of the churman, Mr. Cock’s resignation was accepted with regret, and a resolution was passed thanking him for his services. Mr. J. R. Cruickshank was appointed to fill the vacancy.
