MARINE COOKS’ DISPUTE

OWNERS RESENT BREACH REFUSAL TO CALL FOR MEN AN ADJUSTMENT EXPECTED By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Australian Press Association. Received June 19, 5.5 p.m. Sydney, June 20. Mr. Tudehope, secretary of the Cooks' Union, states that he does not anticipate serious trouble. He has dispatched a telegram to the shipowners in Melbourne, pointing out that the terms of settlement for the cooks’ strike provided for picking-up places at the union rooms. Further, there is a strong feeling against the Barwon, which arrived at Sydney without cooks. Mr. Tudehope is confident that another call for cooks, made to-day, would be successful. He added that hitches are bound to occur. These will disappear with a better understanding. A Melbourne message says the shipowners have telegraphed to Mr. Tudehope, stating that the latter’s telegram was a distint breach of the terms of the settlement of the strike, and that the owners must have an assurance that their free selection of cooks will not be interfered with. The telegram adds that until such an assurance is given the owners will refuse to engage further men for any ships. The cooks’ union later decided to supply men for the Barwon, but although a big crowd of seamen and cooks was in attendance at the shipping masters’ office the owners did not call for men. It is anticipated, however, that the difficulty will be adjusted to-morrow, wheal the manning of idle ships will be continued.
