SPIRIT OF OPTIMISM ABROAD. VIEWS OF SIR JAMES GUNSON. (By Wire. —Special to News). Auckland, Juno 18. "Conditions in Great Britain have im proved tremendously during the past 18 months,” said Sir James Gunson upon his arrival by the Niagara today from Vancouver, after an absence from the Dominion of 19 months. In an interview Sir James explained that the outlook commercially fur the homeland was bright. Many companies which had not paid dividends since the war, did so for the first time last year, and altogether a spirit of optimism was abroad. “It might be accepted without reservation that Great Britain to-day is great;er in every respect than at any previous time in her history,” was the opinion or Sir James. He added that Britain was a world dominant nation without any doubt. Sir James left Auckland in January, 1927, and spent nine months in England and nine months on the Continent, visiting France, Spain, Italy, Austria, Hungary, Czecho-Slpvakia, Belgium, Holland, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. Regarding tho trade interests of Great Britain Sir James said he had noticed the gradual extension and establishment of new connections in Europe, the greatest competitor being the United States, whoso domination in some of the countries, particularly Spain, at the Capital (Madrid) and at other important towns, was very marked.
