MR. HAWKEN OPPOSED
MR. WILKINSON TO STAND INDEPENDENT IN MEANTIME. CONTEST FOR THE EGMONT SEAT. "In response to a very generally expressed request, confirmed by. a representative deputation which waited on me at New Plymouth, and by the almost unanimous wish of the large meeting presided over by you in the Eltham town hall, I agree to be a candidate at the next general election,” writes Mr. C. A. Wilkinson to Mr. J. W. Stubbs, of Eltham.
“My present position is that of an Independent, but, as I stated at both meetings referred to, Parliamentary work must resolve itself into team work to be effectively carried out, so that if elected I must expressly reserve the right to associate myself with any combination or party that might arise, which, in my opinion, will best serve the interests of the country, and in this respect I ask the consideration of the electors, which I feel sure will be given
“In due course my political views will be given from the platform, and in the meantime, I would ask electors not to be prejudiced in any way, and to rely tippn the fact that under all circumstances my vote and influence will be east for the uplifting of the country, and for the happiness and prosperity of the people.”
