CRICKET IN BRITAIN
ENGLAND VERSUS THE REST. JBy Telegraph-Press Assn.—Copyright. Australian Press Association. London, June 17. In a test trial cricket match at Lord’s against the English XL, the Best of England in their first innings made 307 rum?, including Jardine 48, O’Connor 48. Staples 38 not out, Nichole 38. The play vae not reassuring; the bowling was unconvincing. The wicket was dead after Thursday’s rain. Larwood was the only successful man with the ball, though such a pitch did not suit him. Six wickets were down fur 133, then Ames and O’Connor added 71 in 45 minutes. Englands fielding was excellent, but Cliapman’s was ordinary. Hobbs made his first appearance since he tore a leg muscle ten days ago, tut the exertion of fielding renewed the trouble before lunch, though he hopes io bat on Monday.
