TRANSVAAL MATCH. THE FINLAYSON INCIDENT. DISMAY IN NORTH AUCKLAND. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Whangarei, Last Night. The news that Finlayson had been ordered off by the referee in ,'.ie All Blacks -Transvaal match came as a thunderclap to the people of the north, where his good temper and sportsmanship are universally recognised. It is generally agreed that only extreme provocation would have caused the big Aucklander to retaliate. MESSAGE FROM MR. COATES. PLAY UP AND PLAY THE GAME. Wellington, Last Night. Tlie Prime Minister has sent the following message to Mr. W. F. Hornig, manager of the All Black team at Johannesburg: “Although we are disappointed at the Transvaal result, we hope the reverse will stimulate combination and effort. New Zealanders are keenly following your games and our good wishes are with the team. If our South African friends prove superior may the true sporting spirit prevail. Kia Ora. —(Signed) J. G. Coates.” THE PRINCE OF WALES CUP. COMPLAINT AT CONDITIONS. Gisborne, Last Night. At a meeting of the Poverty Bay Rugby Union this evening a letter was received from the Y.M.P. Club (Maoris) complaining of the conditions in the Prince of Wales Cup competition, it being contended that the conditions made in the letter by the late Sir Janies Carroll to the Prince suggesting the trophy, were to the effect that the cup should be for Maori clubs only, and not for Maori districts as laid down by the Maori Advisory Board. In furtherance of this contention attention was drawn to the fact that the inscription on tlie cup stated that it was for competition amongst Maori football clubs. After discussion it was decided to forward the letter to the New Zealand Rngby Union, and also to ask for a copy of the rules relating to the cup. THE ASSOCIATION G ME. STRATFORD DEFEAT HAWERA. The Stratford football team retained their unbeaten record, and by defeating Hawera by four goals to one have made their position safe as champions of the southern division in the Julian Cup competition. Stratford have only Auroa to play next Saturday, and they hold a three-point lead over their nearest opponents. The game was played at Hawera under ideal conditions. From the kick-off Hawera pressed, and for the first ten minute® had the better of the game. Stratford then settled down and dominated play for the rest of the first half. A break away by the Stratford forwards brought them right up to the Hawera goal mouth, and a nice pass to Baker enabled that player to put in a ehot to get the first score. Shortly afterward® another good passing movement started on the left. The ball was then swung right over to Payne on the right wing, and with a beautiful long dropping shot almost from the touch line he notched the second •goal.

Hawera kick off ami attacked, but the defence cleared and away the visiting forwards came again. Shot after shot was put in and within two minutes the cross bar was hit twice and the upright three time®. The goal keeper was beaten all the way. Eventually Hawera cleared, but back came Stratford, Hamilton received in hie own half, and with a run that at once stamped him as exceptional came right through to score the best goal of the match and probably of the season. Stratford kept up the pressure, a free kick giving Hawera relief for awhile, and bringing play nearer Stratford's goal. One or two shots were put in, but Harrold was equal to all the calls made on him, and cleared nieely once, with all the Hawera forwards on top of him. Stratford made another attack, one of the Hawera defenders handling just outside the penalty area. Baker took the kick and put Stratford further ahead. Half time sounded soon after. On resuming, Hawera re-arranged their team and put up a better fight, although Stratford continued to do most of the attacking. Hawera broke away in a good passing movement, and had the Stratford defence in a difficult position, with the result that one of the Hawera forwards put in a great shot that gave the Stratford goalie no chance. Encouraged by this success Hawera pressed again, but were sent back by a snappy movement initiated by Brown and Pinches. The remainder of the game was fast and interesting, but nc further scores resulted, so that Stratford emerged victorious by four goal* to one*
