VICTORIA LEAGUE ACTIVITY
GIFTS OF BOOKS FROM AWAKINO. The executive committee of the Victoria League met laat week, Satisfactory reports were received from the house committee, book committee, arte and crafts and play reading circles, and the junior associate branch. The honorary librari in reported that a valuable gift of 500 books had been received from the Awakiuo public library ccmmittee. Iho library wis dieposed of owing to hck of support. The book committee greatly appreciates this gift, which enables boxes of interesting reading matter to be sent to the scattered country districts. A parcel of magazines and papers ’.vis also received from Messrs. Avery and Sons. Gue’cs of honour at fleial teas during the month were Mesdan-es Dockrill, Bishop Martin and 0. Johnson. The floral teas provide an opportunity of social intercourse between members, and they are well attended by members and their friends. Private patties have also been held in tho club rocm. The president reported on arrangements which had been made with regard to the holding of an Empire shopping week in accordance with the following remit carried at the rc<ent Victoria League Deminion conference: “That tho Victoria League should take steps to have -in Empire shopping week over the whole of New Zealand, round about May 24.” Fortnightly afternoon and evening gatherings are held by the arts and crafts circle <m Wednesday afternoons and evenings. The report of the pliy reading circle was that the evenings ire well attended and much enjoyed by be th readers and visiting members. The ball committee rq»orted successful arrangements for the fancy dress sets.
One letter of introduction was given to a member travelling to England, and ten new members were elected.
