SIREN SOUNDS WITHOUT FIRE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Saturday, May 19. Much excitement prevailed here on Friday evening when at 10.45 the uncanny noise of the fire siren rang out very clearly in tho air. The fire engine, with a full load of firemen, was out in a minute. A large number of people soon congregated, but where was the fire? On went the siren. Around town tore the fire engine, followed by a large number of care and motor bikes looking for the fire. Still tho siren blew. By this time a large number of people from outside the borough had also arrived. Gee it must be a bad fire! Listen to the siren going! Everyone vas still looking to see where the fire was. A short circuit had occured near the town hall, on top of which the siren is placed, and this had caused the siren to ring on Its own account. It rang for about half an hour continuously before the cause could bo located. 3he trouble was soon put right by the borough electrical engineer, and the crowd soon dispersed from their evening’s entertainment.
On Friday evening in the Parish Hal) a very amusing concert was given by a Maori concert party, assisted by Mr. Chris. Hansen, and under the direction of tho Rev. Hadfield, of Waitara. The proceeds are to go towards the Anglican Maori Mission fund. There was quite a good attendance, and that tho crowd enjoyed the items, of which there was a good variation, was evidenced by the number of encores. The singing and dancin" were very good, and the comedian (Air. Hansen) greatly amused the audience. At the conclusion, the Rev. Hadfield said that for some years the Maori Mission had been in a poor financial position, and it was their endeavour to try and improve the position.
