MANGATOKI FARMERS’ UNION

REPORT ON YEAR'S ACTIVITIES. The report submitted to the annual meeting of the Mangatoki branch of the Farmers’ Union last night by the president, Mr. W. E. Carter, was “A remit from this branch on the best means of subdivision of .’arm lands it*. this area was passed by the Dominion conference last August. I believe s>e-.e-thing will be done in this connection. The Ministers of Lands and Agriculture seem favourable. A deputation will probably wait on the Minister of Lands st Eltham on May 22. “During the year the Rural Intermediate Credits Act came into operation. Already a number of boards have been formed and I feel confident that, when farmers become familiar with the workings of the Act, great use will be made of it.

“The branch again held root-growing competitions. Although the entries were not so large as in the previous year the quality and weight of the crops were good. The competition resulted:—Mangolds, McGuiness Bros. 1 and 2; carrots, McGuiness Bros. 1, W. E. Carter 2: swedes, J. P. Marx 1, K. Marx 2. Euchre parties held during the winter were well patronised, and were the means of bringing the people of the district together and keeping alive interest in the union.

“An address was given by Mr. E. K. Cameron on rural credits and the Arbitration Act. This was of great interest and the branch offers Mr. Cameron its sincere thanks. “I would like to thank the union organiser, Mr. Gillies, for the work that he has Bone. The organising in South Taranaki has been an uphill job; nevertheless he has been most successful. Ninety-eight per cent, of the members have been linked up on the order system, which will be, to my mind, a most satisfactory way. I hope members will co-operate, as by no other means can their .problems be dealt with.”
