PUBLIC DEBTS REPUDIATED
ACTION OF SOUTHERN STATES. DISCUSSION IN HOUSE OF COMMONS By Telegraph—Press Assn —Copyright. A.P.A.—United Service. London, April 18. The Government considered it would not serve any useful purpose for representation to be made to the United States with reference to the repudiation of the public debt* by certain southern States, stated Mr. G. Locker-Lampson, Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, in reply to Lieut.-Colonel C. K. HowardBury in the House of Commons to-day. Loans were made for construction and development purposes amounting to £78,000,000, of which the principal interest was owing to British bondholders, said Lieut.-Colonel Howard-Bury. “I hope you will not press the matter for the present,” said Mr. Locker-Lamp-son. I “In view of the fact that' America | pressed its Alabama claims and. the gen- ' erous manner in which we met American I claims arising from the Great War, I ought not we to press our claims on the 'southern States?” asked Mr. A. A. Soin- ' erville. I “Is this not another case where Bri- ! tain ought to send troops to occupy defaulting States for the protection of British interests?” asked Mr. Saklatvala. the Communist member for Battersea North. Cries of “Sit down!” were his only answer.
