POPPY DAY APPEAL
SUCCESS IN ' EW PLYMOUTH. Poppy Day in New Plymouth and surrounding district was greeted with a very warm response yesterday, and though the actual amount collected is not yet available, it is known 'o be approaching a record. Throughout the day a party of ladies, supervised by Mrs. H. Baily, sold poppies in street, shop and house, and it seemed that few people were missed. A produce stall and a flower stall were also conducted in connection with the appeal, both doing very brisk business. Mesdames Everiss, Brash and Charters had charge of the former and Mesdames Chivers and Stephenson of the latter. Refreshments for the helpers were provided by Mesdames Hartnell, T. G. Thompson and Butehart, while Mrs. W. Graham entertained the workers at luncheon. The following helped in the receiving room at the Soldiers’ Club:— Mesdames C. H. Weston, A. M. MacDlarmid, Russell, and R. W. D. Robertson, Misses James, O. Simmons and E. Rawlinson, Messrs. E. J. Carr and Mac. Robertson. Similar appeals were carried out in other centres in North Taranaki, including Inglewood, Waitara, Rahotu and Opunake.
