DROVE CAR NEGLIGENTLY

AUCKLAND YOUTH CONVICTED. By Telegraph,—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night, Pleas of guilty were entered in the Police Court here to-day by Robert Joseph Charles Draper, aged 17, who appeared on remand on six charges arising out of an accident in Karangahape Road on February 25. Accused was charged with converting a motor car to his own use and with tiring in a state of intoxication while in control of a car. He also admitted having no license and driving the car negligently, besides two further counts of damaging the car and a verandah in the course of the car’s career along Karangahape Road. David Thompson was knocked down and as a result of iiis injuries he was confined to the Auckland hospital for some time.

When pleading for leniency counsel for Draper said the youth had never heen in trouble before. He had taken some whisky and had “g,ne mad.” Expenses at the hospital had totalled £23, said Sub-Inspector McCarthy, and Thompson's suit had been damaged. Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., said he was prepared to give accused a chance. Draper was convicted of negligent driving and directed to pay £35 to Thompson at the rate of 15s a week. On each of the other five charges accused was convicted and discharged.
