BIG GAME FISHING
RECORDS FOR THE ;t SEAKpX„ 1, (By Wire.—Special tq News.) Auckland, Last Night. The number of game fish caught by the members of the Bay of Island Swordfish and Mako Shark Club- up till March 12 were 157, according to a report presented by tho secretary at a meeting of the committee of the club. The present season’s record was 37 behind that of last year. There are Blow 129 financial members of the club, three life members' and one honorary' member. Mr. P. S. Arnott, of Sydney, has deposited ten guineas for a trophy for the heaviest swordfish caught during the 1928-29 season. Dr. Horton, of Auckland, has offered a trophy worth £5 for the smallest mako shark caught and officially weighed during the same season. , . To commemorate the catching of hie record 8611 b black marlin, Mr. Bartleet has offered a trophy, leaving it to tho club to decide what shall be done with it. The trophy will be given for th* heaviest black marlin.
Captain Mitchell wrote stating he was pleased that a New Zealander should have caught the heaviest fish of the 1926-27 season, and Mr. Ross Martin was to bo congratulated. The writer hoped that this catch would stimulate interest in big game fishing in New Zealand. Captain Mitchell Is going to Florida after sailfish. ft was decided to assist the curator of the Auckland Museum in obtaining any record fish for that institution.
