(By Wire —Special to News.) Wellington, Last Night. Conditions were ideal for the opening of the Wellington autumn meeting. There was a good attendance and brisk speculation. The Thompson Handicap was a great race, and was won by the favourite, Joy King. Cimabue won the Railway Handicap. Roy Reed rode the winning double. The St. Leger resulted in a comfortable win for Satrap, and in a close finish Reremoana won the Challenge Stakes. Bright Day and Lancer came in for strong support in the First High-weight Handicap, Lady Gay carrying a shade less than half that entrusted upon the favourite. Uralla dashed to the front to act as a pace-maker at the barrier rise and to lead going away from home. Nucleus and Lancer were next in attendance. At the mile post Uralla was clear of Lancer and Nucleus, who were racing on terms, with the favourite at the rear. Approaching the half-mile post Bright* Day made a forward move and was alongside Lancer, with Uralla still in the van. As they turned for home Uralla was first into the straight from Lancer and Bright Day, but Nucleus, who secured a run on the rails, immediately joined issue and in a punishing finish the Lueullus gelding went on to secure the verdict by a half length from Lancer, with Bright Day a length and a half back. Then came Uralla, Lady Gay and Panorama at short intervals. Bright Day and Lancer should do better on Saturday, while an improvement by Uralla would not surprise. FAVOURITE WINS THE ST. LEGER.

Doree, who had been bracketed with Great Charter, was the sole defection from the St. Leger Stakes, in which the southerner Satrap was installed favourite from Great Charter, with good support for Wild Pigeon and Discourse. Shalimar assumed the role of pace-maker over the early portion of the journey, with Damaris and Satrap in behind. As they passed through the straight the favourite was under a strong pull and his rider allowed him to go to the front getting away from home, and at the six furlongs post he was two lengths clear of Shalimar, Talisker and Wild Pigeon, the trio being in line, with Damaris and Great Charter in behind. The favourite landed first into the straight from Shalimar, Talisker and "Wild Pigeon, and was never troubled to win by four lengths, with Talisker, who hung on well, a length clear of Damaris. Great Charter was next, with Discourse in close attendance. Satrap won without difficulty. MISS RANSOM JUST GETS HOME. The withdrawal of Banket, Flicker and First Ruler left the big field of twenty runners to go to the post in the Plunket Nursery, in which Miss Ransom wound up favourite from Flying Hero, with lesser support for Knightlike and Mitina. From an excellent dispatch Miss Ransom, who had drawn an outside position at the barrier, jumped out smartly to cross towards the rails. Royal Duke having actual possession, the pair turned for homo together, with Tcheka putting forward a bold bid for leadership, but with the whips out the lastnamed dropped out, leaving the other pair to apparently fight out the issue. Responding to pressure, Miss Ransom wrestled the advantage to pass the post a half length ahead of Mithra, who came fast from the centre of the field to get up in time to rob P.oyal Duke of second money by a head. Knightlike was a fair fourth, with Marion’s Birthday and Tcheka ahead of Prickles. Briar Root and Tea Miss. Mithra and Knightlike might be improved by the race. JOY KING WINS WELL. All the 23 candidates carded for the Thompson Handicap went to the post, there being two brackets included therein, and one, in Star Stranger and Joy Bird, was installed favourite from Rapier, with Hynanna and Bright Glow also in strong demand. Duke Abbey refused to keep his position at the barrier, but when the tapes were finally lifted the Awapuni representative was one of the first to move, Don Jose and Vertigern being the sufferers. Cerf was actually the first to move, with Duke Abbey and Joy King next, but before a furlong had been traversed Joy Bird had rushed to the front to lead Duke Abbey, Kiosk, Goshawk, Joy King, White Fang and Bright Glow to the turn. Crossing the top the positions again underwent changes, Doree assuming the role of leader from Joy Bird, Bright Glow, Joy King, White Fang, Duke Abbey, Laughing Prince and Le Choucas. Doree was still In the van at the entrance with Bright Glow, Joy Bird, Joy King, and Duke Abbey also within firing distance. In the run to the post Joy King forced his way to the front and went on to win by a length from Bright Glow, with Duke Abbey, who failed to produce his customary finishing effort, a length and a half back. Set Sai! was fourth, being followed home by Doree, Tresham, Laughing Prince and The Hawk. Though Joy King won well, Bright Glow was a trifle unlucky and so was Duke Abbey. REREMOANA SNATCHES VICTORY. Kiosk, Laughing Prince and. Pliillipic were withdrawn from the North Island Challenge Stakes, the first-named pair having been starters in the Thompson Handicap. Reremoana wound up favour if* from Prince Humphrey, with a

I similar margin in the betting market to Eulalie. When the field was sent away on its mission Eulalie dashed to tlic front from Raasay, Lysander, Reremoana and Shirley. Crown Area and Swoopalong early commencing to drift, Eulalie was still in front at the straight entrance, witli Raasay, Lysander, Ri-re-tnoana and Shirley all within striking distance. Gascony was in command a furlong from home, where Raasay and Reremoana burst into prominenc", and in an exciting finish both the challengers gathered up the leader right on the post, the veteran Reremoana securing tn-i verdict by a short neck, with Raiaay a head in front of Gascony. Lysander was right up fourth, with Prince Humplircy and Shirley ahead of Eulalie. SILVERSTREAM TO COURT JESTER. The bracketed pair, Keddar and Kindle, were strongly fancied for the Silverstream Handicap. In the absence of Greengrocer and Star God, Wildwork and Court Jester were also the medium of strong support. Fair Exchange led from Hymestrason along the back, with Keddar"ahead of Spearmiss and Court Jester. At the entrance Keddar got a run on the rails to take the lead, only to be immediately joined by Spearmiss, while Court Jester came with a. late run. In a great struggle with Spearmiss to the finishing post, Court Jester took the honours by a head, with Keddar beaten into third place three good lengths away. Clavers was a fair fourth, with Fair Exchange, Hvmestrason and Rotowhero the next to finish. CIMABUE WINS NICELY. The Hawk and Shirley, both of whom had started earlier in the day, were absentees from the Railway Handicap, the second leg of the double, Money Order being preferred to Limited and Cimabue, with Broad Acre also in demand. 'lhe field left the barrier in line, Cimabue gradually assuming command from Broad Acre as they turned for home, with Cimabue showing the way to Kilperon. Broad Acre and Money Order. Witn heads straightened out Cimabue drew out to win nicely by two lengths from Arrow Lad, who finished strongly to take a place from Limited, who camo from the ruck, a half length separating the pair at the post. Silver Coot was fourth, with Broad Acre and Money Order right up. VICTORY FOR QUANTUM.

The big field of 21 contested the Tin-i--kori Handicap. Subdivision, Le Champ, Tripaway and Helotis were prominent at the home bend. Subdivision took "charge at the distance, but Sarchee challenged and while they were fighting it out Quantum forced a way through and got the decision by the best part of a length from Mendip, who finished well on the outside, and just beat Sarchee, with Subdivision a close fourth and Kahu Ariki and Le Champ next.

HORSE INJURED BY STAKE. CLAIM AGAINST TAKAPUNA CLUB. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, March 15. The Appeal Court, consisting of Sir Charles Skerrett, Chief Justice, Sir William Sim, Mr. Justice Reed, and Mr. Justice MacGregor, is hearing the case William Henry Wackrow against the Takapuna Jockey Club. On December 1, 1926, Wackrow entered his horse Boomerday for one ol the races on the second day of the spring meeting held by respondent, in the course of which Boomerday was struck in the eye by a stake erected by respondent on the track. Appellant contended that Boomerday was worth £lOOO, and after the race was useless; that tlie club was negligent in that the race track was Insecurely fenced and the stakes erected were inadequate; also that the club should have cleared the track of stakes that had fallen in the previous race. The case was heard by Mr. Justice Stringer, who found in favour of the club, stating that he thought every reasonable step had been taken to make owners cognisant of the state of the course and that owners had ‘ the position. They had the right to scratch horses, but appellant did not do so. In his opinion no liability on the part of the club had been shown, and he would give judgment in the club’s favour. Decision in the appeal was reserved.
