CYCLE RACING
LEAGUE CLUB ACTIVITIES. (By “Wheel.”) Th© League Cycle Club’s road racing season was opened last Saturday, and fair fields faced the starter. N. Bellringer won the senior race easily and though unpaced throughout tho race gained second fastest time. Bellringer is probably the fittest member of the eluib at present, and his wins lately are due to consistent training. C. Parker gained fastest time comfortably, after starting from scratch alone. His' time for th© race was a record—lsmin 40sec for 6j miles. Of th© junior riders, M. Plum tree and A. Ellis showed up best in last Saturday’s race, Plumtree gaining first and fastest. Though he was not so good as Ellis during the race, his finishing sprint was a very good effort. The club will hold its final club run to the Meeting of the Waters next week, and all members ar© requested to make a special effort to attend, leaving town at 10 a.m.
Tho second road race of the club’s series will bo held on Saturday, and th© entries are expected to 'be good, as several new riders have already entered. There were 10 starters in last Saturday’s senior event, and seven in th© junior race. C. Tippins has not been training or ra Ing lately, being forced to “spell up” on account of a severe cold. The same applies to D. Nielson. Sid McCann has returned to . New Plymouth after a two weeks’ trip to Greymouth and Christchurch. Though McCann did not score a win on the trip, he gained two meritorious seconds in New Zealand championships and also some valuable experience. It is rumoured that Phil O’Shea, the well-known New Zealand champion rider, may compete in some of the Taranaki sports meeting this month, as he is due to ride at Auckland in April. His appearance in Taranaki would arouse much interest.
