SHOOTING AT TRENTHAM

BETTER SCORING YESTERDAY CADET CHAMPIONSHIP TO HUDSON. SIMONS THE BEST TERRITORIAL. By Tvlegrcßh.—Press Association. Trentham, Last Night. Advantage of the ideal shooting conditions to-day was taken by the marksmen, as shown in the improved scoring in tho territorial and cadet championships. In the final stage in the Trentham match there were a nur_ber of fine hits, and one competitor put all six shots into the moving target. Corporal Sanford, the winner, is a son of the well-known marksman who has attended many National Rifle Association meetings.

A number of teams competed in the anti-aircraft match. This is an innovation and the men did not fully comprehend the conditions. The direct hits recorded were considered satisfactory. White screen targets 10 feet by 3 feet were erected bearing three small silhouettes of aeroplanes along the top, one to represent a ’plane crossing to the right, one to the left, and the centre one diving. Ten shots were fired at each ’plane by three separate men under service conditions, the time allowed being 75 seconds. The practice was keenly watched by Major-General Young. In the cadet championship, which was wen by Sergeant Hudson, Dunedin, the score of 199 exceeded the aggregate of Corporal Collyer, Hokitika, last year’s winner, by 9 points. Aggregates generally showed a distinct improvement. The highest score in th© territorial belt championship last year was secured by Petty Officer Griffiths, of H.M.S. Renown, with an aggregate of 220. He was not eligible to hold it and it was won by G. Parker, Wellington, with 201. The winner of the belt this year Is Corporal H. Simons, Oamaru, 199. The highest score, 217, was obtained by SergeantMajor Kearney, permanent staff. Parker and Lieutenant Duncan, Auckland, tied for second place, the former losing the position on the count back. A night firing competition with Hotchkiss and Lewis guns is being held tonight, Verey lights being used to fire direction targets at 100 yards range. CADET CHAMPIONSHIP.
