A Brisbane cable reports the sudden death of Mr. W. N. Gillies, formerly Premier of Queensland.
Mr. R. G. Webb, who has been appointed to a position on the staff of the Rotorua High School, leaves for the north to-day. Major W. I. K. Jennings, of the New Zealand Staff Corns, has completed the first course at the Imperial Defence College, states a London cable.
Mr, C. E, Nalder, Commissioner of Stamp Duties and Registrar-General of Lande, is at presend in New Plymouth on his annual departmental visit.
A vote of condolence with the relatives of the late Mr. S. W. Shaw was passed yesterday at the committee meeting of the Taranaki A. and P. Association.
Sir Tom Bridges the retiring Governor of South Australia, is a passenger by the Aorangi (says a Sydney message). He intends to do some deep-sea-fishing in New Zealand before he returns to England.
Mr. L. Avann, accountant in the. New Plymouth office of the Lands and Survey Department, who is shortly to be married, was yesterday presented by other members of the staff with an inscribed oak bureau. Mr. B. C. McCabe, deputy Commissioner of Lands, made the presentation and he and Messrs J. A. Redman (chief clerk) and C. G. S. Ellis (chief draftsman) conveyed the good wishes of the staff to Mr. Avann, who thanked them.
The death occurred this week of Mr, R. C. Hooper, aged 77 years, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. R. Clark, Devonport. Mr. Hooper was a stonemason and monumental worker, being well-known in Auckland. He came out to New Zealand over 40 years ago, residing for some time in Auckland, and then removing to Coromandel, where he opened the Moehau granite quarries. For many years Mr. Hooper was associated with the Auckland firm of Bouskill, Limited, and in 1912 joined the New Zealand Marble Company, which was then commencing operations in Nelson. Two years later he returned to Auckland, where he had since resided. Mr. Hooper worked on many contracts in the North Island, including those for the Queen Victoria Monument, Coromandel, the Victoria Arcade, Auckland, the Auckland Boy»T Grammar School, and the Seddon Mounment, Wellington. He leaves a son and three daughters.
