NORTH MT. EGMONT.
SOME RECENT CLIMBS. A'FIRE THAT NEVER GOES OUT. There have recently been many visitors from various parts of the globe, and within the last few days twenty climbers reached the top, including Mr. and Mrs. Mott, of Sydney, and Mr. Neville Nailor, of Palmerston Nor;h. At present, owing to so much haze about, it has been proved that the best time for climbing to obtain magnificent views is at daylight, and four gent emeu achieved this object last Sunday morn. One gentleman, leaving the Mountain House at 4.20 a.m., and thinking he would be the only one elimoiag for at least a couple of hours, reaclud “Humphries’ Castle” by daylight, when he heard a number of voices following close behind, which proved to be a party of three gentlemen who had come through the bush with the aid of torches. The first climber reached the crater at 6 o’clock, where he remained for half-an-hour admiring the scenery below, there being neither clouds or mist on the mountain at the time. Thin ho commenced the downward trail for the old Mountain House, and although chatting to three different part'es on .the way down he was back at the House before the thick mist rose. x
During the past week members of the North Park’Board paid a visit of inspection. Mr. and Mrs. Larsen, lately of New Plymouth and Whangatnomona, arrived on Tuesday, to take up their duties at the North Mountain House, which has • been for many years in control of Mr. and Mrs. Haldane, who left tbar nme day to take charge of the St’ ’’i Mountain House.
Many visitors come to the old Mountain House specially to view the open fire-place, which measures nine feet long and three feet dep, and in which a fire has been continuously burning night and day every since its construction many years ago.
