DESTRUCTION BY FIRE

OUTBREAK AT CHRISTCHURCH. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Feb. 8. Fire last evening completely gutted the warehouse of Aitehison, Steans and Co., Ltd., in Liehfield Street, causing very extensive damage. The outbreak was discovered shortly after 10.30 p.m., by which time it had oh-; tained a firm hold of the middle of the building. The firemen had a very strenuous battle with the flames before the outbreak was brought under control. The stock, which comprised fancy goods of a highly inflammable nature, provided fierce fuel for the blaze. Fireworks exploded and added to the din. No estimate of the damage has yet been given, but it was very considerable, and is largely in excess of the insurance. Mr. Frank Steans, managing director < f the firm, stated that the insurances of the stock amounted to approximately £20,000, and on the building to ab’.ut £5OOO.
