Bowling analysis.—Hammond took no wickets for 41 runs; Staples, three for 93; Wyatt, none for 16; Freeman, one for 57; Astiil, three for 99; Stevens, none for 14.
Total (for one wicket) ........ 30 South Africa’s opening'pair were confident, Taylor polished and Coen impressive. The bowling and fielding were excellent and compelled the Africans to abandon their forcing policy. Staples leg theory also kept down the runs, Catteraill and Cameron indulged in stonewalling tactics, being intent on wearing down the bowling. Later they scored freely and vigorously all round the wicket. The partnership produced 135 runs in 93 minutes for the fifth wicket. Catterall hit two six-es and 14 fours. The ■batsmen were completely on top of the tired 'bowling, and when 50 in the lead Deane declared. Holmes went out to Qie last ball of the first over.
