SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The first meeting of the scliool committee for the new year was held on Tuesday evening, when the following were present: Mesdames J. Guy and A. Hawkins, Messrs. D. J. Kehely (chairman), C. N. Gordge, and Mr. J. Baillie (headmaster). A circular was received from the Taranaki Education Board as to the attitude committees were likely to adopt towards the establishment of Standard VII. classes in the public schools, and whether the local committee was in favour of its adoption. It was decided to reply that the accommodation at the school was well taxed, but at the same time it was recognised there were a good many advantages and disadvantages for and against the proposal. Unless they had the assurance of the board that extra accommodation would be provided it would not be to the best advantage to inaugurate the new class. The final balance of the concert held previous to the breaking up in December showed a credit of £2 12s 3d after the prizes had been paid for, which was considered very satisfactory, and this amount will be carried forward for the benefit of general school requirements. A vote of thanks to Mr. Bailie and his staff was passed for the trouble they had taken in training the children. It was decided that the annual school picnic take place at Opunake beach on Thursday, February 16. Mesdames Guy and Hawkins undertook to canvass tin town for assistance for the picnic, while the chairman agreed to look after the outer area. The committee asks the parents of the children to assist with the providing of refreshments for the picnie, and that as many of them as can attend the picnie will do so. The matter ofg arranging for conveyances in connection with the picnie was left in the chairman’s hands with power to act. A further meeting will be held on Tuesday evening next, the 14th inst., to arrange final details in connection with the picnic. The question of the erection of a wood-shed for storing the wood in wet weather was also brought up, and this was left to the chairman to enquire into.

The committee decided to run a further street stall on Friday, March 2, the lady members being willing to undertake the running of same. Proceeds will supplement the amount already in hand for providing some amusements and books for the library. The committee hopes that all those who have the children’s welfare at heart will support the proposed effort. A general meeting of the show committee was held on Monday evening, the Rev. D. J. Davies (chairman) presiding over a fair attendance. The secretary reported that all arrangements for the show were well in hand so far. It was decided to procure a tent as was done last year, as without it space would lie insufficient owing to more stalls being required. The cups and trophies that have been given for competition it is hoped to place on view In one of the windows at the end of the present week. The committee will be glad of assistance in erecting the stalls on the Thursday afternoon and evening prior to the' show on Friday. ■
