TARANAKI JOCKEY CLUB

PROSPECTS FOR CUP DAY PROMISE OF GOOD RACING. REVIEW OF TO-DAY’S FIELD.

(By

“Moturoa.”)

Splendid fields of first-class horses, a track in good order, every prospect of lino weather, and the presence of the leading flat and hurdle riders of the Dominion, all tend to make the Tarai naki Jockey Club’s autumn meeting, which ojiens to-day and concludes on I Saturday, a memorable one. The influx r of visitors lias been exceptionally large, leading sportsmen from Auckland, Wellington, Hawke’s Bay, Wanganui and other centres arriving yesterday. Some I of the Dominion’s best middle distance I and sprint performers will be seen out ' at the meeting, amongst the number being Reremoam, The Hawk, Kiosk, Pal- ■ eta, Hynanna, Piuthair, Te Monanui, Eden Flail, Transformer, etc., and racing promises to be first-class. Mr. C. O'Connor, with his assistant, Mr. A. Vincent, can ‘be depended upon to send the fields away in good order, and with Mr. W. P. Russell in the judge’s box the public will have nothing to complain of concerning the judging. Mr. H. Coyle has framed his handicaps with his usual care, and his adjustments should bring the fields well together. With Egmont and Takapuna form fresh in mind there will probably be several warm favourites served up, but, on the whole, the races appear to be very open. The Ist Battalian Taranaki Regimental Band, under the baton of Lieut. F. W. G. McLeod, will provide an excellent programme of music, which will add to the pleasure of the gathering. Mr. J. Dunn, proprietor of the Imperial Hotel, will have everything of the best in the publican’s booth, and the luncheon will be provided by the Hygienic Bakery. Mr. E. P, Webster and his capable assistants have all arrangements complete for the success of the gathering. WAITARA HURDLES. One mile and a-half and 100 yards. Ned Kelly M 9 Airtight 9 12 Powhiri 10 7 Elysianor 9 9 Mountain Bell 10 5 Flowing Bowl 9 0 San. Fera 10 4 Royal Flight 9 0 Just John 9 12 Of the nine -corded Powhiri, who knocked up at Hawera, is the -only likely absentee. The top weight, Ned Kelly, has pace and jumps well, and is sure to give a good account of himself. Mountain Bell shaped poorly last week, but San Fera beat all but Nucleus, and should be benefited by the racing which he has had. Airtight’s running on Thursday was decidedly promising, and he appears to bo a promising candidate. Of the lightweight division, Elysianor may be the pick. He ran second at Awapuni and at Marton during the holidays, and has had time to freshen up since then. Summed up, it appears as if the dangerous division includes Ned Kelly, San Fera, Airtight and Elysianor. Elysianor and San Fera have shown as good form as any. NGAMOTU JUVENILE HANDICAP. Five furlongs. Gold Dawn 8 11 Upoko 7 7 Tea Miss 8 B Egefria 7 0 Te Atiawa 7 11 Agreeable 7 0 Fermanagh 7 8 Lady Quex 7 0 Gold Dawn is possessed of a lot of speed, but whether she is capable of conceding weight to Tea Miss remains to be seen. Te Atiawa has not come up to expectations, but (Fermanagh has shown form lately. Lady Quex goes well on the tracks, but has been unlucky in public. Probably when the totalisator closes it will be found that Tea Miss and Gold Dawn will carry the bulk of the money. FLYING HANDICAP. •Six furlongs. The Hawk 9 7 Tip Tree 7 6 Kiosk 9 3 High Finance 7 6 Rapine 8 19 Melissa 7 3 Lady Cavendish 8 6 Oreades 7 0 Te Monanui 8 3 Seastar 7 0 Oration 7 11 Quillflre 7 0 Town Bird 7 9 _ 1 Scratchings may be expected in this race. The Hawk may be reserved for the Stakes on Saturday, and the classic may hold stronger attractions for several others. Kiosk, if saddled up, may be troublesome, and Lady Cavendish is nice and fresh, and races best that way. Te Monanui has done most of his recent racing over a distance of ground, 'but at Trentham earlier in the season he was placed in a sprint event. Oration is on the up-grade again. High Finance has come down from Auckland with a big reputation, and, being a smart beginner, is sure to take some catching round the bends. The strength of the field is difficult to size up, but High Finance, Kiosk and Oration may be expected to shape well if they go to the post. MOTUROA ELECTRIC HACK. .Six furlongs. Mersccis 8 0 Yawl 8 0 Mendip 8 0 Resinous 8 0 Cadenza 8 0 Nlazone 8 0 Aropeta 8 9 Fortalice 8 0 Apathy 8 0 A moderate crowd of “maidens” will contest this race. Mendip was not eligible to start, and the eight left in ha v nothing outstanding to recommend them. Fortalice has run fair races, and Merxcis and Cadenza have shown promise in their work. Possibly Fortalice and Cadenza will go as well as anything. TARANAKI CUP HANDICAP. One mile and a-half. Hvnannz, 9 6 Bright Glow 8 1 Piuthair 8 13 Goshawk 7 10 Eden Fall 8 7 Greengrocer 7 0 Yema 8 4 Hipo 7 0 Transformer 8 2 Manly 7 0 Mint Leaf 8 2 Vivo 7 0 Vivo has been scratched, leaving a fine field of eleven to battle for the handsome cup and the valuable stakes added. Hynanna won well at Hawera, and appears to be none the woise for his efforts there. The Egmont Cup winner invariably runs well in the Taranaki Cup, and Hynanna will be given the chance of repeating Piuthair’s dual victory of last year.- Piuthair would have to be taken into consideration if the sting was out of the ground, but present conditions are all against her. Eden Hall will strip well, though Takapuna Cup running suggests that Transformer may finish in front of him to-day. The best has not been seen of Yoma lately, and he is improving with racing. Mint Leaf may be the better of Mr. E. George’s bracket, and Bright Glow should hold the others safe. Hynanna appears likely to be the public’s choice. Danger may come from Bright Glow, Transformer and. Mint Leaf. If should . be a great racA

The Swell and Restaurant have been scratched. Eleven hold their places, and a smart lot of hacks include good ones like Royal Acre, Kawhakina, VVhaizone and Flying Shot. Royal Acre appears to be feeling the effects of hard racing, and Flying Shot and Whaizone may strip better. With a horseman up, Kawhakina might effect a surprise.

Orazone, Partaga and Sleepy Sol will be absentees from this race. Thirteen remain in, and with Tiega, The Immigrant, Vivo, Manly and The Swell in the field, the issue must be regarded as very open. The Immigrant won in fine style at Takapuna, and appears to be a horse of some class. He should 'be favourite, and solid support may also ‘be forthcoming for Vivo and Tiega.

Royal Acre, Melissa and several others are engaged earlier in the day, but it is expected that Melissa will be reserved for this race. Paul Lucerne beat good sprinters each day at Hawera, and should again be a tough proposition. This pair, Melissa and Paul Lucerne, will claim a lot of admirers, and Ned Kelly (if reserved) should also go well. RIDING ENGAGEMENTS. The following riding engagements have been reported:—R. Reed, Tiega, Tea Miss, Oration, Mint Leaf and Melissa; R. McTavisb, Transformer, Gold Dawn, Manly, Paul Lucerne and Baby Bun; T. Green, Eden Hall, High Finance, The Immigrant and Always; A. McDonald, Powhiri; H.. Burt, San Fera; P. McGuire, Flowing Bowl; C. Adams, Airtight; R. Eagar, Just John; W. Jones, Lady Quex, Quillfire and Goshawk; T. Tito, Te Atiawa, Miss Mercia and Monsogne; R. Mackie, Hynanna, The Hawk; A. McCormac, Yoma; B. H. Morris, Bright Glow; J. Barry, Vivo; N. >F. Johnson, Cadenza and The Swell; D. Watts, Kiosk and Pale'ta; A. Hobson, Elysianor, SCRATCHINGS. Rapine, Town Bird, Marble King, Upoko and Silent have been scratched for all engagements at the meeting. RACING AT DUNEDIN. The Dunedin Jockey Club’s autumn meeting commences to-day, and will be concluded on Saturday. The principal events on to-day’s card are the Dunedin Cup, of 975 sovs., one mile and a-half; the Champagne Stakes, of 600 sovs, six furlongs; and the Publican’s Handicap, of 425 sovs, six furlongs. Thirteen horses have been accepted for in the Cup, amongst the number being Set Sail, Pink Note and Thorndale, which all raced prominently at Trentham. Set Sail has a good horse’s weight, Ost 81b, and may find Pink Note a hard one to concede 171bs to. Thorndale might do better over a shorter distance. Nincompoop is not bred on staying lines, and Satrap appears to be as good as any of the rest. Perhaps Pink Note will be running on when most of the others are stopping. The Champagne Stakes will see Full Feather, Goblin Market and Rin-Tin-Tin measuring strides, and the race is sure to be keenly contested. Full Feather’s recent track form has been most impressive.

Money Order is engaged in the Publicans’ Handicap, and on Ellerslie and Trentham running should go well, though Booster and Good as Gold also go very fast. In the minor events form points to Eliminator, Wayward, Overdrawn and Dubious running prominently. FINAL GALLOPS AT WINGATUI. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, *Feb. 8. The weather was fine for the final gallops at Wingatui, when the outside of the course proper and the plough track were open for work. Operations commenced before daylight, with Booster and Bright Mark running a smart six furlongs. Over the last furlong the latter had the best of it, but Booster, who is very well, was not ridden out. First Sight beat Money Mine over five furlongs on the plough in Imin 4 3-ssec. Money Order pleased critics by the manner in which he skipped over, six furlongs, the last five easily in Imin 5 4-ssec, on the grass. Sky Quest beat Quarterdeck over five furlongs on the plough in Imin 5 3-ssec. Silver Coot covered seven furlongs on the grass, alone, in Imin 36sec. Stormy easily held Zaragoza over five furlongs on the plough, in Imin 4|sec. Wayward beat Clarenson over six furlongs on the plough in Imin 19sec. Luminant beat Rotor over six .furlongs on the grass in Imin 21 3-ssec. Limerick was anxious to increase his pace over seven furlongs on the plough with Arikiwai, in Imin 34 2-ssec. The first furlong took 12 2-ssec, the second 25sec, and the third 37 3-ssec. Countersign and Satrap ran a mile nicely in Imin 49Ysec, on the grass, both going well. Felony beat Maitric over four furlongs, the last three taking 40sec. Overhaul ran six furlongs in. Imin 23 sec on the grass, and was going comfortably at the finish. Money Peer, on the plough, ran five furlongs, the last four in 54 4-ssee. Spearmaid easily beat Black Duke over five furlongs on the grass, in Imm 5 l-ssec, one of the best gallops of the morning. After doing two circuits on the plough Heather Lad sprinted six furlongs in Imin 20sec. _ Pink Note ran six furlongs on the plough in Imin 20 3-ssec, being- picked up by Eyed Ova at the four furlongs and 'beating him home.

Rin-Tin-Tin went nicely over six furlongs on the grass, the last five in Imin 13sec, going very easily. Phanter beat Wine Tray over four furlongs on the plough in 55 4-ssee.

Atapo, Lilac and Wharncliffe jumped two schooling hurdles and then covered a mile on the plough in Imin 52 2-ssec, the latter going much the best. Cartoon jumped two schooling hurdles alone very quickly. Tardy and Set Sail ran six furlongs on the plough in Imin 22sec. The latter is a doubtful starter in the Cup. Good as Gold ran five furlongs on the course proper in Imin 7 l-ssec. King Balboa heat Red Sea easily over four fifriongs on the grass in 52 2-ssec. Rob easily beat Beauty Light over five furlongs on the plough in Imin 4 2-ssec. Nincompoop was too good for Gay Sonnet over six furlongs on the grass, in Imin 20sec, and moved well.
